Summary
AND THE WORD BECAME FLESH
John 1:12-18
Believe in the name of Jesus
• The I AM statements
o I am the bread of life
o “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
o I am the door
o I am the good shepherd
o I am the way, and the truth, and the life
• Jesus Christ “is” God
• Jesus Christ “is” Light
• Jesus Christ “is” eternal
He did “become” something???
(14) And the Word became flesh
He also remained God! (later)
Why say flesh and not man?
Look how the bible describes flesh
Joh_6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing
Rom_6:19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh.
2Pe_2:10 and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust
1Pe_4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh,
Romans 8:…in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,
• Why say likeness of sinful flesh?
• He was flesh but not sinful
• He is the last Adam
• Adam wasn’t created sinful but “became” sinful
• Jesus “became” flesh but didn’t “become” sinful
• He was tempted like Adam but was VICTORIOUS
• Do you see how the fall affected us?
• We are ALL from the seed of Adam
o Jesus – the only begotten of the Father
o Jesus – the only Son from the Father
• Everyone!
• Everyone MUST be born again!
• From spiritual DEATH to spiritual LIFE
John 3:3 unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Could Translate: “unless one is born from above”
John 3:31 NKJV He who comes from above is above all;
John 3:8 …born of the Spirit
Spiritual Death to Spiritual Life
(14) And the Word became flesh
Did the Word stop being God? No
How can Jesus be both, FULLY GOD and FULLY MAN at the same time?
1. Who can describe to me what it is like to be God? From experience!
2. Who can describe what it is like to have sinless flesh? From experience!
So what can we know?
1. Everyone knows there is a God Rom 1:19
2. Those born again DO know Him
Joh 14:9 “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father”
Joh 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
RC Sproul
• Calvin – The finite cannot grasp in its fullness the infinite
• Thankfully – God condescends and corresponds on our level
Human Language-
• Eyes, mouth, feet, arm –
• Clarification Statement
• God is spirit without parts
• God repented – God does not repent
1 Samuel 15:11 ESV “I regret that I have made Saul king
• Sorrow for Saul – Didn’t take him by surprise – No mistakes
• Clarification Statement –
1 Samuel 15:29 ESV for he is not a man, that he should have regret.”
Negation – What he isn’t
Infinite vs Finite
Unchanging vs Changing
Elevate Human Characteristics
All Powerful We can be powerful
All Knowing We can be knowing
All Present We can be present
Analogies (Based on a proportional relationship)
God is good “he is a good man”
Good still means good but the proportion is VASTLY different!
God’s love vs. our love
Affirmative
God is one
God is holy
God is sovereign
When scripture teaches 2 difficult truths affirm both
Jesus was fully God and fully Man
