OT Reading by Joshua Clifton

Sermon Text:  1 Peter 1:1-2

Sermon Notes:

1 Peter 1:1-2

  • Questions about authorship?
    • Contains Peter’s name
      • Quoted by:
        • Clement (95 AD)
        • Ignatius (110 AD)
        • Polycarp (120 AD)
      • Opens with Peter not Simon (name change)
      • an apostle NOT the chief apostle
    • Peter died between 64 and 68 AD
      • About 30 years after Christ
    • A later writing date? Because lack of persecution?
      • Historians, “The persecution wasn’t that bad”
        • Jesus was crucified
        • People like Paul
        • World’s natural hatred of Christians
        • Very little information is known about day to day…
        • We think we are persecuted (other countries)

To the pilgrims

  • What is a pilgrim?
    • Someone who wears a belt buckle on his hat?
    • A non-citizen residing in a foreign land
      • To go on a spiritual journey with a FINAL POINT
      • Don’t belong to the World
      • Journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City
    • We lack the rights and privileges of the world
    • The world lacks our rights and privileges
    • We don’t practice the values and customs of the World
    • And the World doesn’t honor our values and customs
  • Peter does not tell us to remove ourselves but continue

of the Dispersion

  • A dispersed people mixed in
  • The act of scattering (maybe due to persecution)
    • The good seed mixed with tares
    • The chaff mixed with wheat
    • The Christian church scattered in the world
      • Scattered all week
      • Influenced all week
      • How important is assembling together???

Hebrews 10:24-25 NKJV

  • Peter can’t visit but writes to stir them up!
    • Phone, letter, internet… (we can do the same)
  • Do you think if he could meet them, he would???

In Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia

  • A wide land mass of people
  • Is Peter the Apostle to the Jews only?
    • Primarily but not only (30 years)!

Acts 15:7 NKJV

  • Was this letter written to Jews, Gentiles or Both?
    • I think, both
      • No one knows for sure, clue:

1 Peter 1:18 ESV  knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers

  • Written to the Elect of God

(2)  elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father

  • Scattered pilgrims BUT chosen by God
    • Rejected by the World
  • Elect – Comes with all the promises of the OT
    • You are God’s special people
    • A gift to His Son
    • The sheep of his pasture
  • Chosen from the foundation of the world (Eph 1:4)
    • Clearly establishes election

  • What does foreknowledge mean?
  • Based on God foreseeing how one will respond?
  • What is the center point of this view?
    • My actions?
  • Huge jump – Where in the Bible? Despite our response!

Foreknowledge

  • Yes, God has infinite knowledge of all things
  • Not meaning His knowledge of ones future decisions! Why?
  • Do the unregenerate believe in Jesus? No!
  • Do the regenerate believe in Jesus? Yes!
    • What is the cause of believing?
      • Is man the cause?

1 Peter 1:3 ESV  …he has caused us to be born again

  • The unregenerate does not believe, correct?
    • How do you get from non-believing to believing?
  • You being born again, through the Holy Spirit
    • Man is not the cause
  • Will God ever see an unregenerate person believe in Him? No!
    • Why not?
    • Where there is no cause, there is no action!
    • He is not born again but dead in sins!
    • Not one seeks after God.
    • No one can come unless… the father who sent me

  • Foreknowledge: Does God examine all the possibilities and then elects someone?
    • Theoretical categories of regenerate and unregenerate?
  • Let’s see how man responds to this theoretical situation:
    • I’m going to bestow my Grace and Love upon Her!
    • Give her my Holy Spirit so she is born again!
    • Though she is dead, I will make her alive in Christ!
    • I will take out the heart of stone and give her a heart of flesh
    • I will be the author and finisher of her faith
    • I will work in her to will and do according to my good pleasure
    • I will call her my people, my chosen and elect
    • I will give her to my Son
    • He will intercede for Her but not for the world
    • My Holy Spirit will convict her of sin
    • He will lead her into all truth
    • No one will take her out of my hand

  • Guess what?
    • This person always responds positively
    • Irresistible Grace

Isaiah 55:11 NKJV  So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

  • What can Foreknowledge really mean?
    • 2 Things
  1. To foreknow God’s purpose or decree

Acts 2:23 NKJV  Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death;

  1. To set upon someone special love.
    • Root is “to know”
    • OFTEN used as the object of loving care

Jeremiah 1:5 NKJV  “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

  • Does this mean, He ONLY knew his actions?
  • No, he knows him, this is directed to the person
  • God put His special love and favor upon Him
  • Then he said: I sanctified you
  • Text: (2) elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit

John 10:14 NKJV

  • Known here means more than knowledge (foreknowledge?)

Acts 13:48 NKJV

  • How many believed?
    • as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed

in sanctification of the Spirit

  • This is a work of the Spirit

2 Thessalonians 2:13 NKJV  (13)

  • The Spirit of Truth brings you out of deception
  • He opens your eyes to the evil of your sins
  • A light comes into the darkness
  • He makes you alive

for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ

  • Why were they chosen? for obedience and sprinkling of the blood
    • Not a generic form of religion
  • To make them holy
    • for the forgiveness of sins

  • What about the word obedience?
    • The most obvious meaning is our obedience.
    • belief in the truth” 2 Thessalonians 2:13
    • To submit or come under the truth
    • for obedience to the faith” Romans 1:5

Romans 1:5 NKJV  Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name,

Grace to you and peace be multiplied

Greeting or a blessing?  Blessing

Note the Trinity

  1. Father electing
  2. The Spirit working in the person (bringing about obedience)
  3. Christ’s blood atoning for our sin

The entirety of salvation in two verses!!!  Wow!!!

I thought Paul was deep!

Grace to you and peace be multiplied
