God Causes All Things

March 31, 2014

Probably one of the most quoted verses in the Bible is Romans 8:28.  What does Paul mean when he says “all things work together for good?”  What is included in “all things?”  Who does this apply to?  He clarifies the statement with two conditions, for those who love God and for those who are called according to His purpose.  This week’s sermon deals with the statement “all things work together for good.”

Romans 8:28 deals with the sovereign rule of God over all things, nothing can and does happen unless God ordains it to happen.  There is great assurance in knowing the God who we call father is not a bystander hoping we will finish the race.  He is not just merely cheering us on with his fingers crossed.  He is involved in “all things.”

Sermon Given by Pastor Bryan Walker at One Way Christian Center in Olustee OK, on March 30, 2014

Westminster Confession of Faith Chapter V, Section I,   God the great Creator of all things does uphold, direct, dispose, and govern all creatures, actions, and things, from the greatest even to the least, by His most wise and holy providence, according to His infallible foreknowledge, and the free and immutable counsel of His own will, to the praise of the glory of His wisdom, power, justice, goodness, and mercy.

Rom 8:28-30 ESV  And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.  (29)  For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.  (30)  And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

3 Parts

  1. All things work together for good – Promise
  2. For those who love God – Condition
  3. For those who are called according to his purpose- Condition

Amo 6:14 ESV  “For behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD, the God of hosts; “and they shall oppress you from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of the Arabah.”

Job 1:20-21 ESV  Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped.  (21)  And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”

Job 2:10 ESV  But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

Providence!  Providing for future Events

Gen 50:15-20 ESV  When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.”  (16)  So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died:  (17)  ‘Say to Joseph, “Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.”‘ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him.  (18)  His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.”  (19)  But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God?  (20)  As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.

  • Ø Jesus had complete control over the demons

How involved is God in our lives, more than you realize.

Robots – No???  Responsibility -Yes???

What does this do for us?

Dependence & reliance on God

Majesty of God

Assurance of Salvation – More to follow!

Are “all things” Good?  NO – Work together for good

Job 40:7-14 ESV  “Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.  (8)  Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right?  (9)  Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his?  (10)  “Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor.  (11)  Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him.  (12)  Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand.  (13)  Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below.  (14)  Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you.

  • God causes ALL THINGS to work together – You don’t need to believe it for it to be true.

What About Witnessing and Preaching?  Do we have hope?

Pink, Arthur W.  Concerning the character and contents of the Gospel the utmost confusion prevails today. The Gospel is not an “offer” to be bandied around by evangelical peddlers. The Gospel is no mere invitation but a proclamation, a proclamation concerning Christ; true whether men believe it or not.

Not based on the messenger

Not based on the hearer

Joh 10:16 ESV  And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

Let us PROCLAIM the gospel-

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose
