Sermon Notes:

  • New setting, Jerusalem to Judea
  • Jesus was baptizing John 4:2 ESV although Jesus himself did not baptize
  • John was baptizing close by
  • Discussion over purification (John’s disciples)
    • What we do not know
  • Look you bore witness about this person
  • Look they are now going to him
  • What are we going to do about that?
  • Showing some loyalty to John
  • Also concern over losing followers
  • Dispute, early in church history!
  • Look people are following Christ!
  • He is increasing and we are decreasing???
  • What are we doing wrong?
  • What can we do to fix this problem?

  • People are leaving John and going to Jesus
  1. Response:

John 3:27

John 3:35

John is mainly speaking of Christ

The followers are given by God

John 10:29 ESV  My Father, who has given them to me

All who come to Christ are given to Christ

John 17:6 ESV  “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world.

John 17:7 ESV  Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.

John 17:20 ESV  “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word,

John 17:24 ESV  Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me

Is this only speaking of ONLY the Apostles coming to Christ?

John 3:27 ESV  A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.

When someone comes to Christ today, they are given of the Father!

When someone comes to Christ tomorrow, they are given…

  • John recognizes God’s sovereignty in salvation
  • God draws them to Christ
  • Nothing happens by chance

  • People are leaving John and going to Christ

Response 2

John 3:28

  • John has told them he was not the Christ – Savior
  • John was sent to point them to Christ
  • John will not complete his mission if he does not point them to Christ
  • John cannot save anyone – I can’t save anyone
  • We can only point to Christ
  • True preachers point people to Christ

  • People are leaving John and going to Christ

Response 3

John 3:29

  • John’s disciples were upset
    • John was joyful!
    • He rejoiced!
    • This is what John wanted!
    • He has completed his mission! “this joy of mine is now complete”
  • The bridegroom (term savior) was expected

Isaiah 62:5

Hosea 2:16

  • Jesus is the bridegroom (groom)
  • The church is the bride
  • Baal was a false god worshiped by the Israelites
  • Marriages today are broken but God does not break his Promise

  • People are leaving John and going to Christ

Response 4

John 3:30

Who was John?  (Matthew 3:1-)

  • John lived in the wilderness and ate locust and wild honey
  • Told people to repent of their sins
  • Told people the savior was coming

  • Prison walls
  • Beheaded

  • Look what John says
  • He must increase, but I must decrease
  • How true is that for us?

  • He must increase, we must decrease
  • Self-centered or Christ-centered
  • There is power in Jesus Christ
  • You don’t change on your own

John 15:5 …apart from me you can do nothing.

Philippians 4:13  I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

  • These are not empty words
  • He must increase, we must decrease
  • There is no room for the old man
  • You are a changed person, from the inside out

John 3:36

Believing in Jesus! – Life

Not believing/obeying – No life but wrath

  • You are probably thinking, I need to be a better person
  • I need to put _______ down and walk the good walk
  • I need to change _________.

  • That’s all true, BUT!!!
  • I hear a lot of I’s,
  • I need to do this
  • I need to do that
  • I am not here to appeal to your emotions
  • I don’t want to last until lunch, and die off

  • First, turn to JESUS
  • Believe in Jesus
  • You can do nothing apart from him
  • You must decrease, and he must increase!
  • That is the ONLY way you will do anything
  • I am NOT telling you NOT to put away those things!
  • They MUST be put away!
  • You MUST have repentance!
  • BUT, you can do nothing apart from him!

John 15:5-7

You must DECREASE, Christ must INCREASE!!!
