Sermon Notes:

John 15:18-27 ESV

VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE – Explain the need for Reformation

3 Reasons Why the World Hates the True Christians:

  1. The world hated Christ
    1. The world still hates Christ
    2. “Hated without a cause” (Psalms)
      1. Give me 1 logical reason to hate Christ?
      2. Irrational hatred
    3. This speaks to the depravity of man
    4. The world hates Christ
    5. For what reason?
      1. Was he boastful?
      2. Was he prideful?
  • Did he do harm?
  1. Without a rational cause!
  2. What rational person rejects, forgiveness of sin and eternal life?
  3. It is irrational to kill your savior?
  4. The world, by fallen nature hates God.
    1. Eph_2:3 by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
  5. Can haters of God, submit to God?
  6. The will of man is opposed to God. Hates God!
  7. We freely choose him after he changes our heart!

  1. Not of the world
    1. (19) If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own
    2. We belong to Christ – Not the world
    3. Light and darkness
    4. 1Co_2:12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God
    5. Jas_4:4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
    6. Warning!!!

  1. Chosen out of the world

Joh 15:19  …but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

  1. Some say, this was only of the Apostles
  2. Only of Israel
  3. There is NO choosing today
  4. The NT continues to teach election – CLEARLY.
  5. Who are these people?

Mark 13:20 ESV  And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days.

  • Same Greek word for chosen
    • Who are these elect?
    • Some future people?
    • Past, and future elect but NOT now???
    • The world hates the truth of election
    • We want to be our own little gods.
    • The master of the ship
    • The director of our life
      • And we want to HATE God!
    • ONE example of many

1 Corinthians 1:26-29 ESV

Results of This Hatred

  1. Persecution
    1. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.
    2. Christians can’t avoid this!

  1. They will malign and twist, your words – Ignore, your words
    1. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
    2. Only a few kept Christ’s words
    3. The rest tried to trap him
    4. You will be the bad guy!
    5. You may be called insensitive or intolerant

  1. Hate you without a cause
    1. ‘They hated me without a cause.’

Degree of Hatred:

  • If Christ, how much more his Apostles?
  • If Christ, How much more you?

Results In Bearing Witness

John 15:26-27 ESV

  • The Spirit of Truth? Vs. Truth doesn’t matter???
  • The Holy Spirit is TRUTH
    • Thus He is HIGHLY OFFENSIVE to the world
  • We are not offensive on purpose!
    • The truth is offensive!

WHY REFORMED?  WE NEED A REFORMATION!!!

  • Some churches take surveys, to see what the World wants
    • They desire to please the world

  • What music to play!
  • What music to avoid!
    • BASED on what the world wants!

  • What sermon to preach!
  • What sermons to avoid!
    • Did Jesus change his message for the 5,000?
    • Did Jesus ever compromise to bring someone in?
    • NO!!! The World hates Christ!

  • DANGER, DANGER, DANGER
    • If the world is attending your church
      • The world is voted on the church board.
      • The world elects the next pastor.
      • They Remove the gospel
        • Do you still have a church?
      • They tear your church apart
    • Supporting a Church that preaches the TRUTH!!!
      • Light in the darkness

  • We must never compromise the truth to appease the world!
    • Did Christ compromise the truth?
    • Did the apostles compromise the truth?
    • Why would we be ashamed of the truth? (Please the world)
    • If the world likes your church it is void of the true Christ!
    • If the world likes your Christian book it is void of the truth
      • I don’t care how religious you are!
      • I doesn’t matter what good you think you are doing!
      • Religious people can be of the World!

John 16:2 ESV  They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.

Do we shun the world? – NO!

  • Do we exclude the world from our churches? – NO!
  • Do we stop trying to reach the world? – NO!
    • Then what do we do???
  • We take the message the World HATES to the World!
    • Yes! They need what they HATE.
  • Anything less and you are not preaching Christ!
  • Anything less and you are wasting your time!

We are wretched sinners

We deserved eternal death

We hated Christ but now we love him!

He bore our sins, and has given us his righteousness

We are completely forgiven!

We stand before God, clean and holy!

We are no longer at WAR with God!

We are no longer his enemy!

We do not hate, the true Jesus, we love Him!

We are at peace with God!

We have an unspeakable joy, even in turmoil.

We have done nothing to deserve this!  We deserve wrath!

We have not earned this, we simply trust and believe in Jesus!

If the spirit of Christ is calling you to this peace, come to Christ!

Trust in Jesus, believe in Jesus.

He is not your enemy, he is your savior, rescuer, redeemer, deliverer
