Summary

Sermon: Encouraged in Jesus Christ Colossians 2:1-6

Maturity continued.  Why be encouraged and have love for one another? – to better know Jesus.  Why know Jesus? – to have all the riches in Christ.  Why have riches in Christ? – so we are not persuaded by false arguments and to walk in Him.

Sermon Notes:

Colossians 1:28-29 ESV

    • Paul is striving and struggling to bring them to MATURITY
        • We are a, small church, few people – same goal – maturity
            • The churches Paul planted greatly expanded the church
            • Look at the growth during the early church
            • Same during the Reformation
        • Paul is preparing them to stay true to Christ
        • Dealing with heresies
    1. They need encouragement and love – knit together in love
        • We need encouragement and love for one another

Psalms 133:1 ESV

    • Many parts and functions, one body

1 Corinthians 12:15 ESV

    • We desire to be like each other
        • But, we are not all alike
            • I love to sing but I am HORRIBE at it
            • I watch and listen to other preachers and say…
            • You do the same…
    • Don’t get discouraged because you are not a different part
        • Different parts serve different functions
            • Some parts are external, more visible
            • Some parts are covered, needing more privacy
        • All parts are important
                • There are people you desire to be like
                • We learn good qualities from each other
        • We build each other up
            • Yet, we are different
            • We don’t have the same struggles
        • Ultimately, we need to look to Christ (later)

    • What happens if we cut off part of our body or part of the body decides to leave
            • The part dies and the body suffers

2. Some things don’t change, “hearts (need to) be encouraged”
        • We all need encouraged, IN SEVERAL AREAS

    1. Encouraged to grow to maturity –
        • We can become discouraged – maturity takes time
        • We want instant wisdom & instant maturity
        • What about our head, Jesus Christ?
        • Did he just snap his fingers and waala instant wisdom?

When Jesus was 12:
Luke 2:46 NASB

    • 3, days later…  I get into trouble for losing Serena for a few minutes

Luke 2:49 ESV

    • The next chapter Jesus is approximately 30 at his baptism (18 years)

    • Jesus wasn’t born a full-grown man
        • Yes he was fully God in the manger
        • But as fully man he learned
            • Increased in wisdom
            • He knew more at 30 than at 12

Luke 2:52 NASB

        • He grew
            • He increased in size
        • He increased in favor with God and men
            • The human flesh was an addition not a subtraction
        • He submitted Himself to the will of the Father
            • Many times he displayed his all knowing attributes
            • All power by calming storms, walking on water, healings
                • But He also slept
McArthur: “Christ was therefore subject to the normal process of human growth, intellectually, physically, spiritually, and socially.
    • If Him, how much more us
        • Be ENCOURAGED to keep growing and maturing
        • He had to be like Adam to pay the price of Adam

Hebrews 2:17 ESV
Hebrews 4:15 ESV

    • Sin – we have it
            • This is why we don’t love as we could
            • This is why we don’t mature as we should
            • This is why we have different interpretations of the Bible
    • But, you are a new creation – our hope is in Christ, not ourselves

2. Be encouraged to stand firm to oppositions, not by our strength but God’s
        • Christ faced opposition
            • The temptation
            • The religious leaders
            • The cross of Jesus Christ – we cannot lift
            • He has conquered for us
            • However, take up YOUR cross
        • People called Him crazy – they call us crazy
            • Television – Mocked and made fun of
            • Do we join them or stand firm?
        • Jesus never changed his mind
            • He never caved to peer pressure
            • We see sin for what it is
            • By having a renewed mind, we differ from the world
            • Our wisdom is rooted in Christ
        • As the head suffered, so will the body
        • As the head was comforted, the body also

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 ESV

—————-
    • Why, love and encouragement, for what?
        • To know Jesus Christ
        • The mind set on Christ is a mind set on truth
        • To know Jesus is unmeasurable riches

(2) (3)  in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

    • How is this hidden?
        • The world does not see the value of Christ
        • Christ is truth but the world rejects truth

1 Corinthians 1:18-24 ESV

    • The world says we are crazy fools
        • OWCC – One Weird Crazy Christian
        • Are we united as weird and crazy?
    • Help wanted fools for Jesus Christ
    • Let the world mock, they are clueless to the POWER and WISDOM of God
    • While they mock, we need to stand firm and pray for their eyes to be opened

———–
all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge

    • There is nothing greater than the knowing the TRUE Jesus

        • His goodness, his mercy, his love, his wisdom, his truth, his power, his might, his judgement, his righteousness, his holiness, his all fullness and majesty, tempted and without sin, beaten and crucified for my sake, resurrected, displayed in glory at the right hand of God, commander of the lord’s armies, king of kings, lord of lords, mighty counselor, prince of peace, who reconciled us to God, interceding RIGHT now on your behalf.
    • What weapon formed against you will prosper?
    • Who can lay a charge to God’s elect
    • Who can take you out of his hand
    • If God is for us, who can be against us

Revelation 5:11-13 ESV

John the Baptist cried out, …”Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!  (John 1:29 NASB)

    • We are the body, he is our head
    • Christ is in us and we are in him
    • We had a sin problem
        • Now we can be clean
    • This is the Jesus we need to know
    • If you know Him, you cannot and will NOT be deceived
        • The more you focus on Him, the more mature you will be

Colossians 3:15-16 NASB

Isaiah 11:2 NASB

Romans 11:33 NASB

1 Corinthians 1:24 NASB

Romans 11:33-36 NASB

1 Corinthians 2:6-10 NASB

——-

Colossians 2:4 NASB

Knowing Jesus prevents us from straying into heresies

    1. Why be encouraged and have love for one another? – to better know Jesus
    2. Why know Jesus? – to have all the riches in Christ
    3. Why have Christ’s riches? – so we are not persuaded by arguments
    4. So what else do we do?  We walk in Him

(6)  Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,
Be encouraged
