Summary

Sermon: False Prophets, Apostasy and Perseverance 2 Peter 2:17-22

Continuing our sermons on 2nd Peter chapter 2 and false prophets we encounter apostasy.  This appears to indicate one can lose their salvation contradicting the doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints (once saved always saved).  Scripture is clear about our security in Christ.  So, what can these verses mean?

———————- APOSTACY———————-

2 Peter 2:20-22 ESV

Apostacy – An abandonment of what one has professed; a total desertion, or departure from one’s faith or religion.

    • Extremely dangerous
        • CLEAR and severe warnings in the Bible
        • Can result in the TOTAL hardening of one’s heart
    • Apostacy is NOT losing salvation
        • The apostate is NEVER truly saved
    • In 1st John, John is talking about the same type of person
        • He calls them antichrists

1 John 2:18-19 ESV

        • Peter calls them false prophets
            • Compares them to Balaam, who heard from God

    • Apostacy and Perseverance of the Saints – historical doctrines of the Christian faith
        • Once saved always saved

3 Misconceptions about Perseverance (James Montgomery Boice)

  1. Perseverance does not mean that those who profess Christ without actually being born again are secure.

What is an apostate?
    1. Heard the gospel
        1. They received the knowledge of the truth
    2. Made a move towards Christ
    3. Could have made a “profession” of faith
        1. Vocally declare faith in Christ
        2. Made a decision for Christ
        3. But never had a true change of heart
    4. They can even have an understanding of the gospel
        1. Even the demons know about Christ
        2. But they don’t trust in him
    5. On the verge of saving faith
        1. The seed falls on rocky ground – grows and dies
        2. The seed fell among thorns – grows and gets choked

Hebrews 10:26 ESV

    • Not the occasional bad thought – which is a sin
        • A deliberate intention that is habitual

  1. Perseverance does not mean that Christians are always kept from falling into sin, just because they are Christians.
    • Noah’s drunkenness, David and Bathsheba, Peter’s denial of Christ

3. Perseverance does not mean Christians are exempt from all spiritual danger just because they are Christians.
    • The world and the Devil are deeply set against them
    • The Christian will have more trails and hardships

Hebrews 12:6 ESV

    • One of the most secure verses in scripture is filled with dangers

Romans 8:35-39 ESV

PERSEVERANCE DOES MEAN
    • Salvation is a Work of God and he will complete it

Philippians 1:6 ESV

1 Peter 1:4-5 ESV

John 10:27-30 ESV

    • Salvation is by grace ALONE and not by works
    • Salvation is eternal
    • We are kept by the POWER OF GOD
