1 Peter 2:1-8 ESV  the word, as they were destined to do.

So = Therefore – Because of this, do this…
    • Elect
    • Born Again, the cause of this is God
    • Inheritance, imperishable, undefiled and unfading
    • Ransomed by the precious Blood of Christ
    • 1 Peter 1:23 ESV  since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
    • The good news was preached to you

    • Therefore
        • Put away – Lay aside – Remove

Romans 13:12Cast off the works of darkness
Ephesians 4:22 ESV  to put off your old self,
Ephesians 4:25 ESV  Therefore, having put away falsehood
Colossians 3:8 NASB  But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.

Malice – Evil of all kinds
To Injure, revenge, grudges
Deceit – Actively lying, fraud, misleading, deceiving someone –
Hypocrisy – A false appearance of religion.  Hiding a wicked purpose under a noble appearance.
Envy – Hating someone because of perceived better situation.
    • Money, boss, scholarships, boyfriends, girlfriends
Slander or all evil speaking – gossip, backbiting,

Is envy, slander or evil speaking a sign of being born again?

1 Corinthians 14:20 ESV  (20)  Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.

    • Are you an infant in evil?
    • What are you more skilled in?  Evil or Righteousness?
        • New creation! Or The old man
        • This is a call to DO something
            • 1 put away the old
            • 2 grow in the new

Galatians 5:25 NASB  If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

(2)  Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation

    • What happens if a baby doesn’t eat?
        • Babies instinctively eat
            • (Explain lambs)
    • Shortage of milk?  God’s supply is endless
    • Is the milk ever rotten or bad for you?

    • Because we have tasted that the Lord is, kind, gracious & good we put away the old and nourish the new

(3)  if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

    • This is NOT a question but a positive statement
        • Since you have tasted that the Lord is good – do this
            • Put away, malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander
                • Because of God we do…
                • NOT because of us, God does…
    • Those who have not tasted – World
        • The world rejects Chris
    • Christ is the Rock of offence
        • The true corner stone –
            • About Corner stones? (square, straight, no imperfections)
            • The temple corner stone?

    • When man builds – – he builds without Christ
    • When God builds – He, builds with the substance man rejects

(4)  As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,

2 Objects
    • You are the one coming
    • In this verse, Christ, we are in the next verse
        • 1Pe 1:20  He was foreknown before the foundation
        • Here He is chosen and precious

    • By the world’s standard – Trash
    • By God’s standard precious

    • A woman threw away a 1976 Apple 1 – Later sold for $200,000
    • $4 painting at a local flea market – $2.42 Million (Declaration)
    • Dumpster – $1 million dollar scratch off lottery ticket

Do you suppose the people who threw this stuff away regretted it?
——————————————————————————
    • Picture a man sitting in a chair with lights shining down.
        • He’s in a museum, in the center of the room
        • Red velvet ropes surround him
        • Dozens of people gathered around the ropes asking questions
    • The man speaks
        • Yes, I found the diamond in a cave in Africa
        • The cave was full of spiders and snakes
        • I escaped several traps set in the cave
        • We were chased by tribes, with poison darts
        • We had to swim across piranha infested water
        • And he goes on and on…
    • Young boy asks, where’s the diamond?
        • It’s over there in the broom closet

    • Museum – – –
        • What’s wrong with this picture?

    • Can you imagine judgment day?
        • People who knew of Christ – Put Him in the dumpster
        • Ministries who didn’t put Christ at the center!
            • Man in the center with lights focused on him
            • Pastor, deacon or donor centered
            • Program centered, come see our _______!
    • Christ is in the closet???

(6)  For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

    • Who will be put to shame? – Considered Christ trash

(7)  So the honor is for you who believe,

    • Who will not be put to shame but receive honor

(8)  …They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

Same word:
(6)  …Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone
ESV They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
NASBfor they stumble because they are disobedient to the word and to this doom they were also appointed
NKJV  They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.

    • How do you understand this verse?
    • Is God merely passing over them or is this an active action?
    • How does God harden Pharaoh’s heart? (Rom 9, Exo 9)?
    • How does God give the sinner over in Romans 1:28?
    • Joh 12:40  “HE HAS BLINDED THEIR EYES AND HARDENED THEIR HEARTS (Isa 6:9)?

London Baptist Confession Chapter 3, para 3
By the decree of God, for the manifestation of his glory, some men and angels are predestinated, or foreordained to eternal life through Jesus Christ, to the praise of his glorious grace; others being left to act in their sin to their just condemnation, to the praise of his glorious justice.

Westminster Chapter 3, para 3
By the decree of God, for the manifestation of His glory, some men and angels are predestinated unto everlasting life; and others foreordained to everlasting death.

Romans 9:22-23
Proverbs 16:4 NKJV
Correct interpretation because of:

Romans 9:19-20 ESV
You either have grace or justice!

    1. Put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.
        1. What are you more skilled in, righteousness or sin
        2. We do this because of what Christ has ALREADY done

2. Christ is rejected by men but chosen by God & precious
        1. What are you building on?
        2. Did you throw away something precious?
        3. If you see him as excellent now, you will not be put to shame.
