Notes

Ephesians 1:19-20 ESV

Ephesians 2:1-6 ESV

    1. HOW DEAD IS DEAD – The depravity of man
        • Man’s inability to turn to God
    1. DENYING THE POWER OF GOD
        • The power of God is displayed in the salvation of man
    • The importance of this is monumental
        • Get this wrong, get it all wrong
    • We must know the state of man to know the power of God
        • Or we will focus on man and thank man rather than God
    • Imagine if someone said Christ wasn’t dead
        • He was badly wounded
        • He was in a coma
        • Where is the power of God in the resurrection?
            • This should offend you
    • If man isn’t dead and helpless then where is the power of God?
        • We will add something to FAITH, faith + ________
    • Paul describes the hopeless condition of man

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins

    • Well… that’s pretty clear
    • Not physically dead but spiritually dead
        • Paul is describing ALL of mankind (you were, they are)
        • You are to know the immeasurable greatness of his power
    • Does he mean truly dead or sick or sleeping???
            • Was Christ dead or sleeping? (Chapter 1)
    • How were we dead?
        • We followed the course of the world
        • We followed the Devil and his power
            • But what about Christ and his power? (Chapter 1)
Eph 1:21 (Christ was raised above) …all rule and authority and power and dominion
        •  We followed the passions of our flesh
        • We followed our desires,
            • we did not and could not respond to God
    • There is no hope for man
        • Absolutely wrong to think man would choose God (time)
        • Man is dead, he is not working, nor is he cooperating

Ephesians 4:18 ESV

    • The heart of man is stone hard towards God
    • Man exchanges the glory of God for a lie (Romans)
    • Man’s heart is evil continually

Genesis 6:5 ESV

    • Man does not want to know God
    • We were, by nature children of wrath (3)
    • Speaking of nature:

1 Corinthians 2:14 ESV

    • The bible says we were enemies of God

Romans 8:7 ESV

    • The natural man does not, nor cannot submit to God’s law
        • Yet, we think we can persuade men to submit to God?

John 3:3 ESV

John 6:44-45 ESV

    • Jesus says no one can come
        • Does not say “may” come, can come
        • Speaks of the ability of man
        • Man is without hope
        • He loves his sin more than God
        • He will not come
        • Man does not come unless
    • Do all have equal ability? Is the drawing of God universal?
Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me—
    • Consider the drawing

John 12:32 ESV  And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
James 2:6 ESV
Acts 16:19 ESV

    • If John 12:32 was universal, why do people still hate Christ
    • Why are they not drawn to Him?
        • Are all men now, made alive?
        • Are all men now, born again?
        • Are all men now, free from the bondage of sin
    • Jesus told us why people don’t believe?

John 6:36-37 ESV

    • They saw Jesus, not Billy Graham, and they didn’t come? AMAZING
        • We think if we could just get ______ to speak
        • Maybe if we changed the order
        • Jesus spoke the TRUTH of God
    • Why did they not come in? They were not given by the Father
    • It says those who are given will come
    • It doesn’t say they may come
    • It doesn’t say they can come
    • Does this sound like a wooing?
        • All who are drawn WILL come to me

(3)

    • We were all dead and not just dead, under the wrath of God
        • This is the state of man
        • This is who we witness to
        • There is nothing you or I can do to raise the dead…
            • We are simply told to preach the gospel
    • Were is the hope of man???

(4)

    • But God, is our only hope
    • This is the POWER of God
        • When you realize your inability
            • It’s not just mercy, it is a rich mercy
            • It’s not just love, this is a great love
    • The world is under wrath but you, if you hear His voice, are under love
        • I’m telling you the TRUTH about man – It’s depressing
        • The great joy is in But God,

Romans 1:16 ESV

1 Corinthians 1:18 ESV

1 Corinthians 6:14 ESV

    • Where is the power of God, is it in signs and wonders?
        • Signs are called signs because they point to something
    • The greatest display of God’s power is in the resurrection
        • This power is displayed in each person who turns to Christ
Eph 2:5

    • People deny the power of God, by adding to grace
    • What does Paul mean here?

2 Timothy 3:4-9 ESV

    • What does Paul mean by denying its power
        • The power of God is in the gospel truth, the word we preach
    • (6) – Women be on guard, like eve some women are quicker to give into the passions
    • (8) Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses – magicians in Egypt
        • Remove the focus from the power of God to man’s ability

    • Do we believe in the power of God or man?
        • Is it God’s will or man’s will, where is the power?
    • What happens when you don’t really believe man is dead?

    1. We don’t know how to evangelize
    • The Word of God does not have the power to save
        • We must add something to it, we must spice it up!
        • The fact is man does not want to hear the Word
            • The truth is offensive to him
            • But this is the very thing that saves him
    • But the pews are empty and we want to fill them thinking we are doing good, we remove anything offensive.
    • If the church does not believe man is dead it will focus on man
        • Our efforts and our works vs. the Gospel, the Word of God
        • The goal is to reach man by persuasion vs. power
        • We must stir the emotions and motivate the decisions of man
        • If we can get an emotional response, we will win them to Christ
            • Sermons will be prepared to please man vs. God
            • If man has the power, then we will preach to please man
            • If God has the power, we will preach to please God
    • Man wants to hear anything but the truth of God
    • Man does not want to hear he is a sinner
    • The flesh does not want to hear of the wrath of God
        • A church that never preaches the wrath of God so to not offend its people is most likely filled with people under the wrath of God.
        • A church that is afraid the truth will offend its people is most likely filled with goats.
    • If man wants entertainment then we will entertain him
    • Man wants life lessons, self-help, self-esteem, how to be a better person, how to fill his pockets, physical health, then this is what we will promise him, never mind the gospel.
    • How to be a better you
        • No change needed just self-improvement
        • All you need is our 10 steps to a better you

    • Churches look to government to solve the moral and social problems
        • We look to the next president for hope

CAMPAIGN SLOGANS
    • Hope
    • Yes We Can!
    • Believe in America
    • Make America Great Again
    • Herbert Hoover A Chicken in Every Pot and a Car in Every Garage

    • If man’s heart is evil, what can the president do to change this?
        • Can the president change man’s heart?

    • How do you stop gun violence?
        • The cause is the evil in man’s heart
        • Maybe God has lifted some of the restraints on evil?
    • How to save man???
        • We can offer him coffee, pay his electric bill, Invite him to our homes, Treat him kindly and if it’s up to him, he will continue to reject Christ, EVERY single time
    • Surely, we can reason with man?
        • Did the Jews accept Christ’s reasoning?
        • You can make a better argument for God than Christ
            • Without a changed heart they will still deny Christ
            • (37)  All that the Father gives me will come to me
    • YES WE ARE TO DO, but the victory and power belong to GOD

    • How great, how wide, how deep is his love
    • To take a wretch like me
    • There was nothing in me deserving love, yet he loved
    • I did not deserve mercy, yet he gave mercy
    • I did not come to Him, he came to me.

(4)

    • We can ONLY know ourselves by knowing how God describes us
        • If you are drawn in by his word, you will come to Christ
    • We are to know the power of God
        •

Ephesians 1:19 …

We were dead, unable to come to God, BUT GOD!

We fail our brother’s and sisters when we don’t feed them
