By Pastor Bryan Walker
Text: John 19:31-42 NASB
Preparations for the Passover Sabbath (a high day)
- Crucifixions: Prolonged death
- Bodies were left to rot, birds
- Break the legs – breath
- Unlawful to leave them on the cross
Deuteronomy 21:22-23 NASB
- Interesting verse, the Jews didn’t crucify people (4 ways, burning, sword, stoning and strangulation)
Sabbath – Jesus is killed and buried just before the Sabbath
- He is done with his work, IT IS FINISHED
Heb 1:3 …When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
- Women’s Bible Study
- God’s overarching plan, written in the Bible
- “The scriptures testify about me”
- Wednesday nights (The Sabbath)
Christ Restores the Sabbath
- Communion with God
- Remember Christ’s words, “IT IS FINISHED”
Where does the Sabbath come from?
Genesis 2:2-3 ESV
- God didn’t rest because he was tired
- God was enjoying His creation
Genesis 2:8 ESV And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed.
- Man was the keeper of the garden
- He was given the woman as a helper
- Adam and Eve enjoyed the Sabbath with God
- They were the pinnacle of his creation
- He walked with them
- He talked to them
- They were in his presence
- He named all the animals and communed with God
- BUT – GO TO Genesis 3:23
Genesis 3:23-24 ESV
- Something happened between verse 2:8 and 3:23
- Only one commandment
- Why does God give us commandments? Our Good
- Curse
- SWEAT – thorns, thistles
- Pain in child bearing
- The relationship between husband and a wife
- To the ground you shall return
- Man is under the curse / judgement of God
- If there is a God:
- Why is there evil?
- Why is there suffering?
- Lying, Cheating, Stealing, Murder, Betrayal
- Sickness, Disease, Wars
- Sweat, work and toil, just to get by
- And then you die
- Why doesn’t he do something about it?
- How can he subject us to this world?
- We know HE DID DO SOMETHING
- Men of the world, If you don’t believe in God how can you curse Him?
- Humm…
- Deep down we all know there is something better
- The promise land was a “type” of entering into rest with God
- Noah’s Ark was a “type” of Christ
- Foreshadows of things to come
- Jesus has finished his earthly work
- We enter God’s rest through Christ
THE PRICE WAS PAID FOR SIN – Through Christ
- So they break the 1st and 2nd
- But, Jesus is already dead
(34) But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
- Blood and water (What is the meaning of blood and water?)
- Don’t know for sure
- Blood for sanctification?
- Water for justification (baptism)? Unknown
- The spear could have lanced the heart? Unknown
- Do know for sure
- He was dead
- God wasn’t dead, never was
- Some said he didn’t have a physical body
- Thus he didn’t suffer
- Blood and water is proof of the body and suffering
- He was dead
- Don’t know for sure
John 19:36 NASB
- Exodus 12:46 – They were not to break the Passover Lambs bones
John 19:37 NASB
Zechariah 12:10 NASB
- The work of redemption is completed
- BUT, not everything is completely fulfilled
- We still have the resurrection of the body
- The return of Christ!
- THIS WILL BE FULFILLED AGAIN
Revelation 1:7 NASB
(38) After these things Joseph of Arimathea
- Joseph of Arimathea
- Secret follower of Jesus for “fear”
- No one knew he followed Jesus
- Eventually stepped out
- Mark says he gathered up COURAGE and went before Pilate
- Matthew tells us he was rich
- Provides a rich man’s grave
- Secret follower of Jesus for “fear”
- Nicodemus (Change view, regenerated)
- John Chapter 3 (The Son of Man will be lifted up)
- John Chapter 7 (do you judge before you hear him out?)
- 100 pounds of spice
- Took the body
- Bound it in wrappings and spice
- Laid him in a NEW tomb / in a nearby garden
- Only rich – tombs had roll away stones, normally bricks
- Tall enough to stand in
- Opening about 4 ft
- Tombs would have more than one bench or shelves
- Jesus is buried in a garden
- Adam and Eve were driven out of a garden
- GOD WAS PLEASED WITH HIM
Isaiah 53:9 NASB
- Judged with the wicked men (cross)
- Buried with the rich (Joseph of Arimathea & Nicodemus)
We know it was Passover time
Passover/Feast of Unleavened Bread – 7 days
- Christ is the Passover Lamb
- Not a bone was broken
Sabbath /High day
“First Fruits” Beginning of the harvest / day after the Sabbath
FIRST FRUIT (Resurrection Sunday):
Leviticus 23:11 NASB ‘He shall wave the sheaf before the LORD for you to be accepted; on the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it.
Why the “day after the Sabbath???” (Sunday – Resurrection)
1 Corinthians 15:20 NASB (20) But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.
- The first BORN belongs to the LORD
- The entire tradition of the first born: How significant is THAT!!!
I ask this question again –
- What did God do about sin, death, sickness, disease, famine, disasters, war…
- He sent his only begotten Son to redeem us
- Redeem means to buy back
- He made a way of escape (Christ)
- Noah’s ark
- The promise land
- The road to PARRICIDE is through Christ
- So, why is there still a fallen world?
- The guilty WILL NOT enter into his rest
- They will not step one foot in PARADISE
- The world is mixed with wheat and tears
- On the last day
- God takes his wheat into his barn
- Rest/Paradise
- He binds the tears and burns them
- God takes his wheat into his barn
- Rest comes “only” through Christ
- You know the way
- The narrow path
- The guilty WILL NOT enter into his rest
Joh 18:36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world
Joh 18:37 Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
- The CURSE and PROMISE renewed in Revelation
- Those who are of evil will continue in evil
- Those who are in Christ will continue in righteousness
Revelation 22:11
