Sermon: War 101  Ephesians 6:10-20
Today we will enter a very important part of Ephesians verses 10-20 of chapter 6.  There are many great riches found here.  The objective today is to describe the situation we find ourselves in.  The Christian is always at war.  The Christian is poor, and weak in himself with no ability to win the smallest victory.  Also, the pains of war are real.  We are not removed from the effects of this war.
Exodus 17:1-16 ESV
Ephesians 6:10-20 ESV
    • This is a great section of Scripture
        • Do you want to be wealthy and not poor?
        • Strong and not weak?
        • Healthy and not sick?
        • Standing fast and not a coward?
            • Then, we will spend a good deal of time on these verses
            • Compare these verses to other examples in the Bible
    • Today’s SERMON – we will ONLY recognize the situation
        • Church, we are at war
            • Individually and collectively
                • There is more than meets the eye
    • Our enemy is great and all around us
        • How can you fight an enemy if you don’t recognize him?
        • The enemy uses trickery and deceit
            • Sucker punches and blindsided attacks
        • Recognize the might and power of our enemy
            • You should never take an enemy for granted
        • Recognize your strengths and weaknesses
    • Truth, we are, poor, weak, sick and cowardly
William Gurnall, The Christian in Complete Armour
1616 – 1679 Lifespan
The book was a 3 volume work on a preaching and teaching series through Ephesians 6:10-20.  It was originally 1,700 pages.
‘If I might read only one book beside the Bible, I would choose The Christian in Complete Armour.’– JOHN NEWTON
‘Gurnall’s work is peerless and priceless; every line is full of wisdom; every sentence is suggestive. The whole book has been preached over scores of times, and is, in our judgment, the best thought-breeder in all our library.’– C.H. SPURGEON
‘You will often find in a line and a half some great truth, put so concisely, and yet so fully, that you really marvel how so much thought could be got into so few words.’– J.C. RYLE
    • You can read any chapter and not need to read the previous chapters
(10) Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
    • Recognizing the war…
        • Come be a Christian and everything will be easy!
            • You will have no worries or troubles
            • Live in bliss with no struggles, tragedies, or problems
                • Where does the Bible say this?
                    • Are you prepared for battle?
                    • We give little thought to the constant battle
                    • We must prepare and train for war
    • Do we warn our recruits of the sacrifices and dangers of war?
        • We might drive people away if we tell them
            • So we let them go out unprepared, devoured by the Devil?
            • To be chewed up and mangled
    • What is the cost of being a Christian
        • Have you compared the gains and losses?
            • How did Jesus recruit fellow warriors?
Luke 9:23 ESV
Luke 14:26-33 ESV
    • Does this make you sad?
        • Does it surprise you that Christ is so bold to say ONLY ME
            • I am first, BEFORE everything else
            • Before your family, before your possessions, before life itself
    • If your losses are more than your gains, you are in the wrong camp
        • You can gain the whole world and lose your soul
        • Which is greater to you?
            • Is Christ greater than all of this?
                • You can ONLY see this by the Spirit
    • Man drowning in an ocean with a 80 pound bag of gold
        • Drop the gold and live, keep it and die
            • He keeps it as long as he is alive.
            • He sinks to the bottom, rich as could be
            • He is happy for a while
            • But life is like a blade of grass, here today gone tomorrow
            • He runs out of air and dies
                • Now what happens???
                • He goes to judgement without his gold and friends
                • He stands before God, naked with his sins exposed
                    • God is so holy the angels must cover their facce
                • His gold can’t pay the debt of his sin
                • He now faces the WRATH of God for breaking the law
                • No blood of the lamb, no stripes to be healed by
    • To gain Christ is to gain everything worthwhile
        • He now realizes how unimportant the gold was
        • His family and friends are now unimportant
        • His only hope was Christ but Christ wasn’t important
    • Does it surprise you that we are in a war
        • Are the enemies of Christ, your enemies?
            • Or are you a friend of the enemy?
            • Do you spend time in the enemy’s camp?
        • In Christ’s camp during the day and with the enemy at night?
James 4:4 ESV
    • Translation, you cheating, unfaithful, two-timing whore
        • Whore???  Israel’s spiritual unfaithfulness – harlot
        • James says, you are God’s enemy, a traitor and an his adversary
James has in view professing Christians, outwardly associated with the church, but holding a deep affection for the evil world system. McArthur
    • There is a battle going on, ALWAYS
        • Internal battle – dead, rotting, stinking corpse
            • Thoughts of the mind
                • We are to take thoughts captive and obedient
        • Paul describes the internal war:
Romans 7:20-25 ESV
    • The battle is internal and external
        • Not against flesh and blood but a whole host of enemies
        • The world is held captive by the enemy
            • The power of the enemy is sin through lies
            • He makes something that brings death look SO GOOD!
        • Is our will uninfluenced and completely free? (know the enemy)
            • Where does the desire to sin come from?
                • Who can overcome sin through the flesh?
                • Understand the death of the old man
            • We are slaves whom we obey
Romans 6:16 ESV
    • There are many traps laid for us
        • Mine fields, trip wires, ambushes and sneak attacks
            • In our churches, family, schools, work, TV
            • Escape to a monastery, the mountains or deserted island
                • Even then our mind is assaulted by our thoughts
    • The enemy is always present and ready to attack
        • Are you ready for the next battle?
    • The only peace a Christian has is in Christ
Ephesians 2:14 ESV  For he himself is our peace,
(10) Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
    • Assess and know thyself
    • Who has been weak before?
        • What do you suppose caused your weakness?
            • When are you the most weak?
            • When are you at your strongest?
    • By nature you are weak sick and a coward
        • Yes, a coward
            • Cowards are thrown into the lake of fire
            • Notice in Acts the Holy Spirit emboldened them to preach
        • What animal does the Bible describe us as?
            • Sheep
            • Out of all the animals, I would not pick sheep to go to war
            • Why are you so weak?
                • To display God’s great power
        • What animal does the Bible describe our adversary as
            • A roaring lion, a great dragon
            • False prophets (lying spirits)-wolf in sheep’s clothing
        • Sheep vs. a Lion, dragon or wolf
            • How long will the sheep last
            • I had sheep and they don’t fight lions or wolves
            • The enemy is MUCH stronger than you
    • It’s not about you and your strength
        • It’s about the Lion from the tribe of Juda
            • Two great lions squared off
                • The lion of God was victorious
                • The shepherd of God slays the lion
        • How? By the truth
            • He became the lamb of God, a fellow sheep
            • Spotless and without blame
    • Or adversary:
The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo! His doom is sure.
One little word shall fell him.
    • We tremble not for him
        • Means we are in the battle
            • Not, Jesus take the wheel
        • Paul’s whippings were felt by Paul
        • Luther’s stress was felt by him
            • We are comforted in our pain but we experience pain
    • What’s the one little word, Luther talks about?
        • Is it Jesus, grace, God, what is the one little word?
        • It’s not just the name of Jesus
        • In the name of Jesus means the power and authority of Jesus
            • But His name alone is not it?
            • What is always true of the devil?
            • What is always true of Christ?
        • The one little word is “Liar”
            • The testimony of Christ is true
            • The Blood of Christ, paid the debt
            • The Devil has no more standing in the court of God
            • The accuser has nothing to accuse us of
Revelation 12:11 ESV
    • Notice, it is not about your life, your health or your wealth
        • It’s about what God has done through Christ
        • Don’t hold on to that bag of gold
    • Our strength comes from Christ
        • in the strength of his might!
    • Our faith is in Christ’s mighty power
        • Not just believe in this power
            • We must rest in this power
    • John 15:5 ESV  for apart from me you can do nothing.
2 Corinthians 1:8-9 ESV
———– CLOSING ———
    • You are at war and in the war
    • We will experience the pains of war
    • Our accuser is strong but a liar
    • We are weak
        • Our strength is from Christ
    • Christ has already won
God willing, we will talk more about the power next time
