A Mystery and All Will Unite in Christ

Summary

Sermon: A Mystery and All Will Unite in Christ  Ephesians 1:7-10
Sermon for 11 Feb 2018:  Paul speaks of a revealed mystery.  We will go over this mystery and also see how we will all unite in Christ?  We will ponder what this unification will be like.  Can you truly imagine a place without war, sickness, death, or sin?  All of our experiences now are touched by these things, no matter who you are.  However, for those who repent and believe in Christ, you will spend eternity in pure peace united under Christ, those who won’t…  The truth is, your time spent here will seem like heaven compared to the wrath to come.  It’s simple, repent and believe unto life and forgiveness or continue.

Sermon Notes

Ephesians 1:7-10 NASB

    • At least 3 possible readings for (wisdom and insight)
        • All could be correct
        • But what does Paul mean here?

    1. Is the wisdom and insight tied to the outpouring of grace?
        1. He lavished Grace according to all wisdom and insight

2. According to His wisdom and insight He revealed the mystery…

    • Meaning based on God’s wisdom the mystery was hidden but revealed in this time
        • We know this is true

3. The wisdom and insight is imparted to us to understand the mystery of His will
        1. In all wisdom and insight  (9)  He made known to us

Let’s explore 3 further:

(9)  He made known to us (Who is US?)

We have discussed us in great lengths
    • Us meaning the saints
        • Chosen and predestined
        • Adopted as sons
        • Redeemed by his blood
        • Forgiven of sin
    • Is there new wisdom and insight we possess?
        • The plan of God in Christ has been revealed!
        • We no longer see the world the same
        • We are no longer blinded by sin
        • The flood gates of TRUTH have been opened
        • We have different friends, different circles, different desires
        • The world believes in random chance
            • We see the God who orders all things
        • The world sees the laws of physics
            • We see the law maker

We are not all equal in wisdom and insight but there is a vast difference between the least of us and the greatest in the world

The great scientist with all of his equipment and knowledge tries to figure out how evolution has taken place.  He has more evidence that anyone of the creator.  Yet, the simplest Christian knows more that this highly educated man.

Where does this knowledge of the truth come from?

1 Corinthians 1:26-29 NASB

    • This is why I fully embrace the historical doctrine of election
        • No other doctrine is more clearly presented in scripture and so widely ignored
    • There are people much smarter than you and I
        • (27)  but God has chosen the foolish things of the world
        • God has chosen the weak things of the world
        • God chose the base things of the world
        • God chose the despised things of the world
        • (29)  so that no man may boast before God.
    • How did you come to Christ, by worldly reason or knowledge?
        • The proud say,
            • I brought myself to this place
            • I studied the scriptures and made a decision
        • The humble say, I am nothing
            • Who am I that God has revealed these things to me?
            • I was a wretched sinner
            • Apart from God’s action, I would be IGNORANT
            • But…

In all wisdom and insight (9)  He made known to us the mystery of His will

    • What is this mystery?
    • There are many specific mysteries revealed to us
        • The gentiles coming in
        • The trinity
        • Christ is God and man
        • The Holy Spirts working in Regeneration
        • The mystery of resurrection and the coming of Christ
        • The mystery of lawlessness…
    • However, here, I believe this MYSTERY includes all mysteries
        • Specifically, His revealed will to us
        • All of the things we understand and the world does not
        • Not that we understand all things clearly
            • But we have understanding

John 15:15 NASB

    • Jesus uses the same word for mystery in . Mark 4:11

Mark 4:11 NASB

    • Jesus didn’t just reveal one mystery but many {in one}
    • Once again, a distinction
        • God deciding who he will reveal Himself to
        • Notice Paul says:

(9)  …according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him
(9)  …according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ ESV
(9)  …according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself NKJV

    • Theme is according to God’s purpose in Christ
        • God reveals to whom he wants, when he wants
        • We may think it is our purpose but it’s God’s.

The story of Shanksville High School (Flight 93)
Canceled English class, provided vegetarian food…
The purpose of the student

    • The unexpected purpose of God made clear!

————-
Ephesians 1:10 NKJV  that in the dispensation
(10)  with a view to an administration
Ephesians 1:10 ESV  as a plan

    • What does the word dispensation (NKJV) mean?
        • 2 meanings
    1. If you are under authority, it is the office or stewardship given
    2. If you have authority, it is the plan or an administration

Stewardship (under authority)

Luke 16:3 NKJV
Titus 1:7 NKJV
Colossians 1:25 ESV

    • Plan, Administration, or Dispensation
    • God is not under authority, He is the authority
    • God is the administrator or the creator and director of the plan

(10)  the fullness of the times

    • From Christ forward, these are the “last days”
        • Fullness of the times means when God is ready
    • God has a plan and will bring it about in time
        • It would not serve my purpose to reveal my plan to the students.
————–
    • Question, what is dispensationalism vs. covenant theology
        • John Nelson Darby 1800’s
        • 7 dispensations sections of time
            • God interacting differently with each time
        • Scofield, hinted at different ways of salvation
        • But we are all saved by Grace alone through faith alone
        • Covenant theology, – the overarching covenant of GRACE
    • God does interact differently but Grace has always been the only way
        • Adam was shown grace, Noah, Abraham, David…
        • Dispensationalism, keeps the nation of Israel separate from the gentile church.
        • God is still going to fulfil things for the nation of Israel
        • The rebuilding of the Temple???
—————
NASB (10)  …
Ephesians 1:10 ESV  …

    • To sum up, head up, to unite, all things in Christ
        • The universalist says
            • A few verses later “Children of wrath”
    • Others say this means Jew and Gentile believers
        • All believers will be under Christ
    • MLJ – believes it should be translated re-unite all things
        • Under a system that is ALL good.
        • The earth was without thorn or thistle
        • The heavens were without war and the devil
    • Everything that survives the trial by fire
        • All of the heavenly hosts
        • All of the redeemed church without sin, spot or blemish
        • All things unified under Christ
        • Maybe even the animals

Isaiah 11:6 ESV

Highly symbolic language, meaning peace like we have never known

    • We are surrounded by war, disease, and death
    • All we have known was a world of sin
    • We await a new heaven and a new earth
        • We will join a peaceful harmony under Christ
        • There will be joy and beauty we can’t imagine
    • Do you want to be part of this kingdom of peace?
        • An eternal kingdom of peace or wrath
        • Do you hate the pain and suffering here?
            • Wait until you experience wrath there?
            • Or you could repent and trust in Christ
            • He will forgive the sinner…
    • There is a day of peace coming
        • Yes, we have peace in Christ now
        • But place has no more sin, no more death and pain
        • Serve Christ now
        • Have faith in Christ, what he has done
