Doctrine of the Incarnation – Sermon

December 29, 2016

  • Incarnation – “In”-Into, “Carn” flesh, (the word, carnivore – meat or flesh eater)
    • So, Incarnation – The Word “into flesh”
  • Why study this? Why is this important?
  1. We should desire to know our creator?
  • Moses spoke with God and YET, Moses said show me your glory!
  • We are to be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding (1 Cor 1:9)
  • “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3)
  1. Preach true doctrine and guard against false doctrine
  • DOCTRINE– In a general sense, whatever is taught. Hence, a principle or position in any science; whatever is laid down as true by an instructor or master.
    • Jesus taught true doctrine, the Apostles taught true doctrine
    • However, there is false Doctrine
    • We are called to discern, truth from a lie
    • We are to pass on the truth
    • How can we pass on something if we don’t possess

1 John 4:2-3

  • Notice how important this is!
  • Is from God or Is not from God and the spirit of the antichrist
    • He was not an illusion
    • He actually became flesh

John 1:1-3

John 1:14

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us

  • We may convey the wrong message if we say, God became man
  • He became flesh but didn’t cease from being God
    • He put on flesh
    • Not God in the shell of a man
    • (Another way) Flesh was added to Him
      • He did not need flesh
    • The Trinity affirms that God is one in essence and three in person

(1689) so that two whole, perfect, and distinct natures were inseparably joined together in one person, without conversion, composition, or confusion; which person is very God and very man, yet one Christ, the only mediator between God and man.

Athanasius became the Bishop of Alexandria 328 to 373

Massive persecution under Rome was ending – Constantine (313)

Christianity was spreading, through the Roman Empire WITHOUT WARS

Northern Africa, the Middle East and a good portion of Europe

Where TRUE Christianity was spread there was peace and morality

Barbarians were turning their weapons into plows – Never seen before

200 years before Muhammad was born – No Muslims

He wrote, “On the Incarnation” (Around 319, before he became Bishop)

  • Arianism – Jesus was created by the father, He didn’t exist eternally and he was not divine and thus not equal with God in essence.

His body was for Him not a limitation, but an instrument, so that He was both in it and in all things, and outside all things, resting in the Father alone. At one and the same time— this is the wonder— as Man He was living a human life, and as Word He was sustaining the life of the universe, and as Son He was in constant union with the Father. Not even His birth from a virgin, therefore, changed Him in any way, nor was He defiled by being in the body. Rather, He sanctified the body by being in it.

Philippians 2:6-7

  • “For if he was in the same form, nature, and essence, he must be equal to him” John Gill
  • Same attributes, same names
  • Emptied Himself – Not of His divinity but of his position / glory

  • Gnostics said the flesh was evil and God could not join with evil flesh
    • He didn’t really come in the flesh.
      • Spirit of the antichrist –1st John 4:3 –
    • Docetism said Jesus only seemed to be human, didn’t have a true human nature
      • Thus he couldn’t suffer on the cross
      • Nor did he really die
    • Heresies continue, on and on and on…

John 17:5 NASB

  • Jesus is the preexistent eternal Word “who was with God and was God”
  • He didn’t stop being God in the manger
  • A true human nature, not different than ours, (sinless)
  • “No crying he made?” Should say, “No sinful crying he made.”
  • OT- God appears in the “form” of man, “Theophany”
  • NT – 2nd person actually takes on humanity
    • Full human nature
  • He was truly human and truly divine
    • He grew weary and slept on the boat & he calmed the storm
    • He hungered in one place & in another place he created food
      • 2 Full and Complete Natures,
      • Each nature is distinct
      • Only 1 Person (not two minds)

Hebrews 2:14 NKJV

  • Why did he need to partake of flesh?
  • To atone for sin
    • He lived the perfect life
    • He was the spotless sacrifice
    • He was tempted as we are tempted, yet without sin (Heb 4:15)
    • Our mediator

Someone said: “He who was God with God, became God/man with men”

Matthew 1:20-23 NKJV

Isaiah 7:13-15 NKJV

  • Not just a babe in a manger BUT God with us!
    • God has not ceased being God
      • All things continue to be held together
    • Virgin birthThose who won’t, can’t, and don’t believe
      • Signs, and miracles from the Bible?
      • Inspired infallible Word of God?
      • Probably don’t believe God created all things out of noting?
        • Does he sustain and uphold all things or wind it up?
      • Can’t believe in the resurrection?

  • These are all DOCTRINES
    • Men of the past, contended for the Truth!
    • The Bible tells us to contend for the faith! (Jude 1:3)
    • These things are deep but, we must guard against false doctrine!
      • Remember the spirit of the antichrist!

Galatians 4:4-5 NKJV

  • Jesus was not born of the will of man but of God because he had no earthly father.
    • Do you see the parallel?
  • The entire salvation plan depends on Him
  • It is God alone who saves us!
  • Even when we are “born again” it’s not the will of man but of God (John 1:13)
  • Born of a woman?
    • Geologies are always man oriented never woman oriented!
      • Son of Adam (True)
      • Son of Abraham (True)
      • Son of David(True)
      • Son of Mary (True)
      • Son of God (True)
    • Not the seed of the man

Genesis 3:15 NKJV

  • Very special birth
    • He took on a TRUE human nature from Mary
      • Continued in his divine nature
    • Not a human nature under original sin, – guilty of sin
      • Thus the need for a special birth
      • A miraculous birth
    • He was not born with the same sinful nature we have
    • He was born in the flesh capable of being tempted
      • Yet he was without sin
    • I can go no further – Great Mystery and Miracle

  • Christ entered His creation
  • His humanity and divinity he is able to be our ONLY mediator between God and man. Divinity & Humanity
  • He conquered sin where we could not
  • He was innocent but our sins were imputed to him
  • We were guilty but his righteousness was imputed to us
  • This is love, he would come down, empty himself for a sinner
  • Shouldn’t we spend time knowing Him
