If you struggle with the doctrine of election, hopefully this sermon will help you see the truth. You will see how this is all about God’s glory and this is very good news because without election, none would be saved.
Romans 9:13-21 can be a stumbling block to some because we naturally think God should choose us based on something we have or haven’t done. We think to do anything besides this wouldn’t be fair. We can even go as far as to say, we choose God apart from God. The common Arminian view taught widely today attributes the election spoken in Romans 9 to the nation of Israel and to those of the past and not to the Christian today. However, if it isn’t fair to have election now, it wasn’t fair then. The truth is if God chose us based on us he wouldn’t choose anyone because none are good, no not one. All deserve wrath and judgment. The fact that he did choose us is good news.
Paul deals with our natural fleshly objections by posing some questions to the reader. Romans 9:14 ESV What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! Romans 9:19 ESV You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?”
