False Teachers and Prophets

Summary

Sermon: False Teachers 2 Peter 2:1

This is a very serious topic.  Consider this, the Bible calls false teachers, Irrational animals, creatures of instinct, ravenous wolves, dogs who return to their vomit, a clean pig who returns to filth, shepherds who only feed themselves, accursed, dammed, grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage.

Sermon Notes:

2 Peter 2:1 ESV

Jude 1:3-4 ESV

⦁ This is VERY serious!
⦁ It’s not so bad, turn a blind eye, it’s on them…
⦁ Where is the fear of the Lord?
⦁ There is a VERY flippant attitude today concerning Truth!

⦁ What does the word of God say about false teachers? A LOT!!!
⦁ Jesus, Peter, Paul, John, Jude, Hebrews
⦁ Irrational animals, creatures of instinct, ravenous wolves, dogs who return to their vomit, a clean pig who returns to filth, shepherds who only feed themselves, accursed and dammed, grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage.

Romans 16:17 ESV
2 John 1:10-11 ESV

⦁ Don’t judge??? Is confused with discernment! Really?
⦁ There’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing but we can’t say, “Wolf!!!”
⦁ There is Satan coming as an angel of light, we don’t want to offend?
⦁ Don’t name, names?

2 Timothy 2:16-18 ESV

⦁ Paul specifically warned them to stay away from these to people
⦁ Their speech is like a gangrene which spreads
⦁ Gangrene causes death to parts of the body
⦁ The body will sever it’s connection with the infected parts
⦁ For the body to survive these parts must be removed
⦁ THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS TOPIC
⦁ THIS IS A VERY LARGE TOPIC

⦁ I see 3 basic levels
⦁ Active deceivers – Know they are deceiving the people and continue, normally for money or fame
⦁ Unknowing deceivers – They have been deceived and deceive others – Without repentance, still guilty
⦁ Highly influenced – Being deceived but have not fully embraced the deception – Without repentance, still guilty

What is a false prophet? Remind you of tests from last week

Test 1: – Is it biblical (even if it comes true) Deuteronomy 13:1-5
Test 2: – What is the moral character of the prophet (fruit)?
Test 3: 100% Accuracy Deuteronomy 18:20-22

⦁ Where do you find false teachers?
⦁ Eating with us, intermingled in our assemblies
⦁ So called men of God
⦁ Not necessarily outside the church
⦁ Peter says they are among you
⦁ Jude says they will be at your love feasts
⦁ Jesus said they will come in my name -Christian

who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them

⦁ They are NOT openly denying Christ
⦁ “How can they bring in destruction and deny Christ, in secret?”
1. They would continue to profess a form of Christ
⦁ Deny his existence, his claims, or his attributes, Albert Barnes
2. They might perform charities and appear to be religious
⦁ Many non-Christians perform charities
⦁ The Pharisees looked good on the outside
3. False prophets/teachers can have false signs and wonders

2 Thessalonians 2:9 ESV The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,

⦁ What are miracles and do they continue today?
⦁ If miracles are answered prayers, yes they continue today
⦁ If miracles are God working today, yes they occur
⦁ These are “ordinary” events and we should expect them
⦁ Ordinary, Meaning they occur often, compared to…
⦁ Is there a difference between answered prayer and signs?
⦁ The bible doesn’t have a Greek word for miracles but signs, wonders and power – See RC Sproul
⦁ Are the same signs continuing today?
⦁ Are the dead being raised at will (really dead)?
⦁ Can limbs grow back?
⦁ Can someone walk on water, axe heads float
⦁ Can you be in a burning furnace and not get burnt
⦁ Can someone part lake Altus
⦁ Speak to a storm and immediately calm it
⦁ Turn water into wine
⦁ Create food to feed 5,000
⦁ What is a sign and what is its purpose?

⦁ Jesus, believe me for the works
⦁ Nicodemus – We know you have come from God because of the works
A sign of God’s revelation: Hebrews 2:4 ESV while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

⦁ Jesus, the Apostles, Moses, Isaiah, Elijah and so on… performed miracles
⦁ If miracles are proof of divine revelation and the same type of miracles occur today, expect the bible to grow to 67, 68, 69… books
⦁ Book of Mormon & Koran
⦁ Both books acknowledge Jesus but will not lead to salvation

Matthew 24:24 ESV For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

⦁ Does the office of prophet continue today?
⦁ Not talking about God directing our path
⦁ Not talking about God, showing us His truth
⦁ God speaking directly to us, outside of His Word
⦁ Be prepared to add books to the bible
⦁ Can a foundation be laid more than once?

Ephesians 2:20 ESV built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,

⦁ Does the office of Apostle continue? Christ’s direct representative on earth who speaks for God.
⦁ Peter & the Apostles – Act 1:21 –Specific qualifications
⦁ Paul was chosen by Christ and taught by Christ himself
⦁ New Apostolic Reformation – C. Peter Wagner, Bill Johnson’s Bethel Church, Hillsong (Brian Houston), Tod Bentley
⦁ Question: Can we go to an apostle today and hear divine revelation?

Some object to the notion that God communicates directly with us, supposing that everything that God wanted to reveal He revealed in the Bible. This cannot be true, however, because there is nothing in the Bible that says it has 66 books. Peter Wagner, MacArthur, John F.. Strange Fire

⦁ Low view of the scriptures, very high view of experience (often wrong)
⦁ Yet, the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth
⦁ If one is filled with the Holy Spirit, speaking by the Holy Spirit, a spokesperson for Christ, an Apostle, why do they often make wrong predictions?

John 15:26 ESV “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.

John 16:14 ESV He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

A revival focused on the Holy Spirit is a false revival? If the Holy Spirit points people to Christ in repentance, it is a true revival.

⦁ The New Apostolic Reformation, is not Apostolic nor is it a Reformation
⦁ The protestant reformation (500 years now)
⦁ The focus was on Christ, Sola Christus
⦁ Sola Scriptura – We have plenty of miracles (signs), they are recorded in the Bible, the Bible is the only infallible word of God.
⦁ The reformers didn’t claim apostleship
⦁ They were opposed by the Roman Catholic Church who claims apostleship and rejects Sola Scriptura and Sola Fide (saved by faith alone)
⦁ “so that all men may attain salvation through faith, Baptism and the observance of the Commandments” CCC 2068
⦁ “Moved by the Holy Spirit, we can merit for ourselves and for others all the graces needed to attain eternal life” CCC 2027

even denying the Master who bought them

False teachers and religion seek to dethrone God, inflate man and his works

1. Limiting God’s power and might
⦁ You are little god’s
⦁ God has no authority in certain areas, it’s up to you!
⦁ Forsaking God’s sovereignty and rule over all things

Picked one teacher of many — Andrew Wommack – (Know someone who went to his college)
⦁ Appears to be in rebellion to his previous pastor who had horrible God maligning doctrine
⦁ Can’t find any information prior to 1976
⦁ Mr. Wommack’s backlash developed equally heretic doctrines
⦁ Started in Childress, TX – radio program
⦁ Move to a small town in CO and claimed to raise someone from the dead – But no one it towns remembers anyone being raised.
⦁ I’m going to tell you something you probably never heard before (here comes the heresy). God is not sovereign like the church believes.
⦁ There were restraints on God but he brought Jesus as fast as he could to the earth
⦁ He believes the sovereignty of God doctrine is the worst heresy
⦁ It’s destructive thinking to think that God permits suffering
⦁ You and the devil are sovereign in this area

⦁ You have a part to play in your salvation, you have to reach out and take what God has done.
⦁ Grace is God’s part faith is your part
⦁ God gave authority to us. You have to cooperate and pursue God.

No one has authority over God, not the Devil, not you, not me, no one!
⦁ The crucifixion was the greatest suffering endured – was the devil sovereign?
⦁ God said it was his purpose

John 10:18 ESV No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

1 Chronicles 29:11 ESV Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all.

Psalms 135:6 ESV Whatever the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.

Not even a sparrow falls to the ground

Who is sovereign over live and death, you, the devil or God?

1 Samuel 2:6-7 ESV The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. (7) The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts.

⦁ God is sovereign– not you or your word of faith

———————-God does his part and we do ours??? ———————–

John 6:44 ESV No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.

John 3:3 ESV Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Romans 8:7-8 ESV For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. (8) Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Ephesians 2:8 ESV For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this (faith) is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

—————————– Works based salvation ——————————-

Galatians 1:6-8 ESV I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— (7) not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. (8) But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.

⦁ Lack of fear for God – Repent – Gospel
