OT Reading by Scott Reynolds

Sermon Text: John 21:1-14

Notes:

John 21:1-14

  • John seems to finish his Gospel in 20
  • BUT HE KEEPS GOING – He’s a preacher…
    • JUST one more point
    • Actually… 2 more points
      • Catching Fish
      • Feeding sheep
    • 2 Main Points
      • Finding the lost
      • Caring for his people

FINDING THE LOST

  • How to accomplish it?
  • First, how NOT to accomplish it!

  • So there were 7 men in a boat…
    • Peter (1), Thomas (2) Nathanael (3)
    • John (4) is one of the sons of Zebedee – James (5)
    • Another was probably Andrew (6)– Peter’s brother
    • Some think the last was Philip (7)
  • REMEMBER, How Peter meet Jesus???

Matthew 4:18-19 ESV

  • So now you know where this is going!
  • Peter said I’m going fishing
    • Others, great idea! Count us in.
  • Natural to return to what you know
    • Told to wait on the Holy Spirit
    • Bad week
    • Get lost in your work

2 Thessalonians 3:11 ESV

  • They fished all night
    • As day was breaking (dim light)
  • Jesus is there but they don’t recognize him
    • Do you have any fish?
      • Sadly, NO
    • Cast on the right side?
      • Cast on the “correct” side
      • Jesus meant to cast on the conservative side
        • Starboard – Right
        • Port – Left
        • Sheep are on the right – goats to the left

  • Similar Encounter:

Luke 5:4-11 ESV

  • How do you catch fish?

  1. Need fishermen
  2. Need a boat
  3. Need a net
  4. Need Jesus Christ

  • 2 Accounts – No fish
    • They worked all night
    • But they ONLY worked ONE night
    • Many work for years and years
      • They net nothing
    • Oh, but I…
      • If I do this the ministry will grow
      • I sacrifice my time
      • I sacrificed my life
      • I fed the poor
      • I tithe
      • I sing
      • I teach a class
      • I got up and came to church today
      • Maybe we are really working hard?

  • Why do we do what we do?
    • Are we doing it for Christ?
    • Do we do it for a thank you?
      • Do we do it for our fellow man?
      • This is good!
      • We are to love the Lord God
        • And love our neighbors
      • NO CHRIST, NO FISH!
        • He said…

John 12:32 ESV  And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

  • If we proclaim the Truth of Jesus Christ

  • Why did the fish get into the net?
    • Because they cast the net???
      • No, Cast all night and no fish.
    • Why?
      • Christ drew them in!
      • How? By HIS POWER!
      • What do you mean by POWER?
    • I am lifted up I will woo all men – No!
    • I will DRAW all of my sheep!
    • The word DRAW is always used in a POSITIVE since

Joh 21:11  So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled (draw) the net ashore

  • The GOSPEL OF GOD for it is the power of God for salvation
  • The Word of God says!
    • His sheep hear his voice
    • He calls them by name
    • His sheep follow him
  • IRRESISTIBLE GRACE
  • Then WHY does He use men?
    • He could have the fish swim to the shore and flop up on the beach

1 Corinthians 1:21 ESV  …it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.

How is he lifted up?

1 Corinthians 2:1-2 ESV

PROPER CASTING

“Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

“Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.”

  1. Follow His Word (His orders, not surveys)
    1. Diligent to know his Word
    2. Knowing the TRUTH is fascinating!
    3. Telling others is EXTREMELY fascinating!

          4. Who needs grace and mercy?
          5. No one
          6. A small group of Christians
          7. They stood out
          8. They were different
          9. With Christ they changed the World
  • How important is preaching & teaching?
  • EVERYTHING hinges on preaching & sound doctrine
  • His people want to hear the TRUTH
    • They don’t want hype
    • They need to hear there about sin and judgement
    • They also need to hear Grace and Mercy

    3. He who commits sin is a slave to sin
    4. The wages of sin is death
    5. We all deserve the eternal wrath of God
  2. However!
    1. Sermon will play on Christmas–
    2. We celebrate the incarnation
    3. Immanuel – God with us!
    4. He lived the perfect life
    5. Yet He was put to death and punished for wicked, wretched, rebellious, depraved, filthy… person
    6. This is LOVE!!!
    7. He who is forgiven MUCH loves MUCH!
    8. So, we love Him, because he first loved us

————

  • Notice, not only are they forgiven
    • They dine with him!!!!!!!!!
  • Their labors are finished for the day
  • We will also dine with Him!!!!
  • Do you REALLY believe this?

…………

You thought I was finished… – John

1 More small point

Notice the respect

  1. John 21:12 ESV …Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.
    1. One or None?

RC Sproul Points out

  1. Joh 21:7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.

Jesus is LORD!
