Sermon: God Help Us

2 Peter 1:5-13; John 18:37-38

Have we come full circle since Pilate said, “What is truth?”  Many today don’t believe we can attain truth.  We have banished God’s revelation and the church is becoming ineffective, where will this lead us?

Sermon Notes:

2 Peter 1:5-13 ESV For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, (6) and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, (7) and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. (8) For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (9) For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. (10) Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. (11) For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (12) Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. (13) I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder,

No exegesis of this text today – Topical

1. Peter reminds them of these qualities and truth
2. Stirs them up by reminder

⦁ Remember the Truth Project, Romans, John, 1 Peter and a few topical sermon series
⦁ Remember all that God has provided
⦁ Remember all the truth, and we are still here

Pilate asks; “What is truth?”

John 18:37-38 NKJV Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” (38) Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all.

⦁ Do a Bible search on truth.
⦁ Nearly 100 verses in the NT alone, speaking about TRUTH
⦁ Do you think truth is important?
⦁ Pilate was a skeptic, “What is truth?”
⦁ As if truth can’t be known
⦁ Many today are the same –
1. How did we get here?
2. What does the Bible say?
3. Now what do we do?

Joh_1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Joh_4:23 …the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth
Joh_14:6 … “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Joh_8:45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.

⦁ We don’t really want to hear the truth
⦁ Pilate had an innocent man standing in front of him
⦁ Pilate knew this was wrong
⦁ The mob definitely did want truth

⦁ Can truth be known today?
⦁ Many today say truth is unknowable?
⦁ Pilate thought so…
⦁ Philosophy today, “it is not desirable to know or seek truth.”

We can only hope to access the full truth via revelation if revelation from a transcendent source is preserved and intact. Sarah Clifton

What does Sarah mean by transcendent?

⦁ Something from outside the box
⦁ Mankind will not accept this source, why not?
⦁ The fall of man and original sin

Genesis 3:4-5 ESV But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. (5) For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

⦁ Man wants to be autonomous

Autonomous – self-governing, self-ruling, self-determining, independent, sovereign, free

⦁ If there is a God, shouldn’t these things apply to God instead of man???
⦁ God would be self-governing, self-ruling, sovereign, free…
⦁ However, we don’t like submitting to authority
⦁ Not just an authority, but God
⦁ Why Not?
⦁ We enjoy our sin
⦁ We think we are free but we are bound by it
⦁ Rom 6:20 For when you were slaves of sin
⦁ Adam and Eve didn’t depend on God
⦁ The temptation was to be free to do as they pleased (Slaves)
⦁ They would define good and evil
⦁ They wanted to be like God
⦁ Can you see this in the world?

HOW Paul start his summary of the Gospel “Jesus loves you” or “God has a wonderful plan for your life?”

Romans 1:18-19 ESV For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. (19) For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.

⦁ By suppressing the truth of God they are turned over to sin

“If the church is ONLY focused on sin, it is ONLY treating the symptoms, not the disease.” Me

The disease is the suppression of God’s truth and the exaltation of man’s autonomy (self-governing, self-ruling, self-determining, independent, sovereign, free).

⦁ Man is like a patient who doesn’t want to know the disease
⦁ I’m in control, I’m independent, I choose where I will go
⦁ Man’s determination, man’s will
⦁ Man will define what is moral
⦁ Man will define marriage
⦁ Man will define gender
⦁ Religion based on decisionalism vs. regeneration

⦁ Do we hear about God’s will and purpose?
⦁ I believe the autonomy of man is a virus – church
⦁ Man DOES NOT want God

Romans 3:12 ESV All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

Alpha & Omega Ministries, Pastor Dan Confessi, May 30th 2017

Premodern Era, Christian influences (Christ – 1500’s)
⦁ God exists
⦁ He knows everything
⦁ He is the foundation of knowledge
⦁ He has revealed Himself – We have general and special revelation
⦁ There can be truth because of God’s revelation

Romans 1:20 ESV For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

Modern Era (1500’s to about 1800’s)
⦁ Man IS BECOMING autonomous
⦁ He believes he can discover truth
⦁ Truth was still attainable:
⦁ Rationalism (Truth through reasoning)
⦁ Experientialism (knowledge through experience, science)
⦁ Rejecting Special Revelation (Word of God)
⦁ Still believed in God – General revelation

Postmodern Era (Mid 1800’s- ?)
⦁ Man IS autonomous
⦁ There is no God
⦁ Rejects General Revelation
⦁ Rejects Special Revelation
⦁ We now believe absolute truth is not attainable
⦁ Truth is not desirable
⦁ Nothing is certain
⦁ There are no absolutes
⦁ Inclusion no exclusions (unless you claim truth)

⦁ There are many ways to God – This is not offensive
⦁ Jesus is the only way – Highly offensive

⦁ If you have no absolutes, EACH person defines truth as they see it
⦁ I am always right and you are always right
⦁ Even if we disagree???
⦁ How can you call a man a woman or a woman a man, it’s up to you
⦁ There is no truth, it’s all relative

Psalms 14:1 ESV The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”

Presuppositions – pre suppose, a position
⦁ Your starting point – There is no God
⦁ How to explain creation without God?
⦁ Evolution and random chance
⦁ A big bang without a cause
⦁ The age of the earth is adjusted to give time for chance
⦁ Great arguments (theories) with many holes, pawned as fact
⦁ All geologists look at the same rocks, but not all have wisdom
⦁ You children will be ridiculed, if not educated
⦁ Sadly the Postmodern era leads to Nihilism –
⦁ A condition in which all ultimate values lose their value.
⦁ An extreme form of skepticism: the denial of all real existence or the possibility of an objective basis for truth.
⦁ Abortion on demand
⦁ Killing of the elderly
⦁ Back to the beginning
⦁ Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?”
Luke 21:24 ESV They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

⦁ Hold fast to the truth
⦁ Avoid autonomy but rather be in submission

When the pots say to the potter “The potter has no role in determining the shape, function, purpose or destiny of the pots” (Paraphrase James White)
⦁ This is extremely arrogant

Romans 9:20-23 ESV But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” (21) Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? (22) What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, (23) in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory—

⦁ How can we witness to the world?
⦁ How can we reason with the world?
⦁ The world doesn’t care about creation – they dismiss it
⦁ If we are not anchored to God and His truth, what will the future look like?
⦁ Who will define morality? Your neighbor?
⦁ Pleading and reasoning with man to stop suppressing the truth
⦁ If there is no truth there will be chaos
⦁ ABOVE ALL – Preach the Gospel

Romans 1:16 ESV For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

⦁ Recognize God is still sovereign

John 6:37 ESV All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

⦁ Jesus Christ is the only way, truth and life
⦁ Repent and turn from your sins and come to Christ
⦁ The answer is not preaching against sin
⦁ The answer is preaching for Christ
⦁ We were all slaves to sin at one time or another
⦁ Now would be a good time to come back to Christ
⦁ There is forgiveness

Proverbs 9:10 ESV The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Church don’t be ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
