Do you love me more than these?  More than what? 3 Possible

  1. More than – Fishing Gear and the fish
    • Is his occupation more important than Christ?
    • Probable meaning
      • If he shouldn’t have been fishing
      • John McArthur’s position

  1. More than you love your friends
    • Does he put Christ first or his companions
    • Not likely – the meaning
    • Christ tells him to feed his sheep
    • Love for the brethren is Love for Christ

1 John 4:20 ESV

  1. *** More than your friends love me
    • Most likely because of the overall lesson
    • Remember the BOLD assertions Peter made?

Matthew 26:35 ESV

John 13:37-38 ESV

  • Sense of boasting
  • I will follow you
  • All the others may scatter but not me

Joh 21:15  …

  • He does not say that he loves him MORE than these
    • A more humble response
  • Jesus doesn’t call him “Simon Peter” but “Simon Son of John”
    • Peter – means stone or rock

Joh_1:42  He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

  • Changed his name but is calling him by his original formal name
    • Parents – Bryan Eric Walker
  • PTSD – MASSIVE GUILT –
    • Watched the crucifixion (battle)
    • Did nothing, scattered and hid (didn’t fight)
    • Deigned Him 3 times (active denial)
    • Very hard for a POW who actively betrays his country

SETTING

  • Day break in April [High of 68 – Low of 49]
  • Peter just went swimming “WITH HIS CLOTHES ON”

John 21:9 ESV

PREVIOUSLY

John 18:18 ESV

  • By one fire he denies Christ 3 times
  • By the other fire he affirms his love for Christ 3 times
  • Without this event, Peter’s role is uncertain
    • Can he continue with the 11?
    • If so, what authority would he have?
    • Christ publicly restores him

4 different words for love

  1. Storge [Sto –rr –gay] – Natural unforced type of love. Example between siblings Mary, Martha and Lzarus.
  2. Eros [Eros]– Passionate or sexual love. English word erotic.
  3. Phileo [fil-eh-o] – Brotherly love, very close friendship (Philadelphia)
    1. Love based on friendship
  4. Agape – Most powerful and sacrificial love – Expressed in action
    1. Love your enemy

Do you Agape (love expressed in action) me?

Yes I [fil-eh-o] (based in friendship) you.  …“Feed my lambs”

Do you Agape (love expressed in action) me?

Yes I [fil-eh-o] (based in friendship) you.  …“Tend my sheep.”

Joh 21:17  He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you [fil-eh-o] me?” (Jesus changes the word) Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you [fil-eh-o] me?” (Interchangeable) and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I [fil-eh-o] you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.

John 21:18-19 ESV

  • John wrote many years after Peter died
    • Peter crucified upside down?
  • “by what kind of death he was to glorify God”
    • Glorifying God in death??? NOT common today
      • Sadly – Israel in the wilderness
      • The slightest bit of trouble, why Lord why!
    • Follow me – Means – Follow me
      • You cannot do it on your own – Holy Spirit
    • David and Jacque – Glorified God in death.

  • David Jude Goodale died on December 12, 2016.

  • David couldn’t speak so Jacque spoke

(John 21:19)  (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”

  • Jacque has been feeding His sheep
    • Of all the available ministries, I KNOW This one has truth
  • What about you?
    • Jacque’s ministry is powerful but it’s not your ministry
    • We cannot sit back and let one woman carry the gospel alone

(21)  When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?”  (22)  Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!”
