  • Doctrinal Divide
    • Major reason for the reformation
    • Selling of indulgences

What is an indulgence?  “”An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven”

  • Raise money for the church
  • Not condone by the Roman Catholic Church
  • However, not stopped until the council of Trent 1545-1564

Current Absolution (forgiveness of sin):

 

“God, the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of his Son, has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sin, through the ministry of the Church. May God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

 

  • Priest is speaking on behalf of the Bishop
  • The Bishop gives his authority to the Priest
  • The Bishop derives his authority from the Pope
  • The Pope derives his authority from Christ John 20:23

INTERPRETATION OF:  John 20:23 NKJV  If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

 

  1. Can it mean, the Great Commission (ONLY)?
    1. Sins are forgiven by hearing the Gospel
    2. They are sent to preach the Gospel
    3. Great Commission in Mark says:

  • The ministry of reconciliation / Great Commission

 

Corinthians 5:18 NKJV  (18)  Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation,

 

  1. Problem 1: Jesus is speaking to all in the room, not just Peter.
  2. Problem 2: The Apostles never personally absolve anyone of their sins
  3. However, they do 2 things:
  4. By the teaching of the Holy Spirit and the teaching of Christ, they established the infallible and inspired New Testament
