Notes:

1 Peter 4:3-11 NKJV
    • There was no after life – Predominate belief
        • You live and you die, so live the best life now.
        • No consequence
        • No limits, if it pleases you…
    • Peter reminds them there is judgement
        • There is accountability
    • Peter lists some sins,
        • Don’t walk in them
        • Judgement

(6)  For this reason the gospel was preached
    • What reason?  Judgement
        • Gospel is good news
        • Forgiveness, new life, new ways?
    • The good news… explain the gospel

    • Does your believing in something make it true of false?
    • The earth is flat
        • Flat Earth Society
            • Does the Flat Earth Society exist?
                • Actually want to see a meeting.

Example:
    • Bills come in the mail
        • No means of paying them
        • Ignore them
    • Then one day, the repo man comes
        • You will say, but I didn’t know
            • But you did know, you just ignored the truth
            • You said I’ll deal with it tomorrow
    • Your perception is clouded, because you like things

    • Gospel – Everyone needs to hear it.

also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

    • Somewhat difficult verse
    • Several interpretations – 2

    • The Bible speaks of dead in two primary ways
        • Spiritually dead or physically dead?

    1. Those who are spiritually dead are spiritually alive???
        • Can’t be both at the same time

2. Those who are physically dead, and received the gospel, still live spiritually
        • Christianity was new
        • It promised eternal life – All there is, is this life now
            • Yet, the first Christians died
            • People judged and scoffed at them
                • Live your best life now
                • Enjoy these parties
                • Why restrain yourself
        • All ties together – the scoffers, (5)  They will give an account
—————

(7)  But the end of all things is at hand;

    • Ties back to the coming judgement
        • Last days
        • How MUCH MORE, closer to the end?

1  1 Peter 4:7 ESV  …therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.

    • 2 phrases self-controlled and sober-minded
        • Fully in control of one’s thoughts and actions
        • Being clear-minded – Not drunk
    • The opposite is cloudy–minded
    • DEBUNKS – Mindless Christianity
        • WE ARE TO KNOW GOD – and His ways
            • How can we walk in them, not knowing them?

2  1 Peter 1:13 ESV  Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded,
3  1 Peter 5:8 ESV  Be sober-minded;

    • The mind must contain truth!
        • From outside ourselves
        • From God

    • Notice Peter’s FIRST concern is prayer
        • for the sake of your prayers.
        • Remember Peter slept when Jesus Prayed
            • Peter denied Christ – Jesus went to the cross
    • Your first resource should be prayer
        • Persecution comes, what do we do FIRST?
        • What is our FIRST reaction???
    • “Shoot first, ask questions later.”
    • “Pray first, ask questions later.”
———————
1 Peter 4:8 ESV  Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.

    • How important is love for one another?
        • ABOVE ALL

Matthew 24:12-13 ESV
1 John 4:20 ESV

    • Has someone wronged you?  love covers a multitude of sins
        • Have you wronged someone?
    • Has someone treated you badly?
        • Have you treated someone badly?
    • Has someone lied to you?
    • Have you been mean to someone?
    • Have you given a cold shoulder?
        • Has someone given you a cold shoulder?
    • Maybe you have been offended?
        • Maybe you have offended someone?
    • Is there someone you won’t talk to?
        • Is there someone who won’t talk to you?
    • Do you go out of your way to reconcile?
    • THIS IS A SMALL TOWN
        • Feuds
        • Sincerely held doctrinal differences

Matthew 18:21-22 ESV

1 Peter 4:8 ESV  …since love covers a multitude of sins.

What does this mean?

    • The vicious cycle will be broken with you!
        • No more back and forth
        • This stops evil from escalating
    • Love starts with the Christian
    • Evil stops with the Christian
        • Because we have the LOVE OF GOD
        • Not a file cabinet mind

If God forgives our sin, shouldn’t we forgive others?

Matthew 18:32-35 ESV

What Peter is saying

    • The Christian church MUST have LOVE – or it doesn’t have Christ
        • Love is not a fuzzy feeling
        • Love is action

(9)  Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.

    • The early church met in homes
    • Inns were not always available
    • They took care of their own poor, no welfare
    • Serving one another, without “grumbling” (Israel wilderness)
    • The world is hostile, this environment needs to be loving

Sheep and the goats:
Matthew 25:40 ESV

    • Who is the least of these?
    • He says “my brothers”
    • Are we taking care of our own?

(10)  As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

    • Your gift is for ministering to one another
    • NOT, for self-gratification
        • The gift is of the Grace of God
        • Don’t hide your gift

Peter’s focus is often lost today. Christians eagerly discuss spiritual gifts, but in a way that would surely distress the apostle. Their concern is not how they can serve others and bring glory to the Lord. Rather they seek self-fulfillment. They want to discover their gifts so as to establish their own identity.  Clowney, Edmund P.. The Message of 1 Peter

(11)  If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies,

    • I must understand – I am preaching God’s Word
    • I must not take it lightly
    • You must not take it lightly
        • When you, speak, teach or preach, do the same!

that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

    • Glorify God!
    • Would you like to belong to our family?
