Sermon: Be Ready for Christ’s Return 2 Peter 3:9-18
We have seen the hurricane warnings.  We know about tornado warnings.  Weather forecasters warn.  People board up homes and businesses and flee from the destruction to come.  God’s Word is clear, there is a day coming when complete and utter destruction will come.  If you knew Christ was coming tomorrow, would you live differently today?
One Way Christian Center is a Reformed Baptist Church, located in Olustee, OK close to Altus, OK and Altus AFB.

Sermon Notes:
2 Peter 3:9-18
    • Reviewnot wishing that any should perish
    • Why go over this again?  Often misquoted text
        • Taken out of context
        • Proof text of the goodness and mercy of God
        • Historical interpretations
            • Similar verse
Ezekiel 33:11 ESV
    • Not in the text but it is good to know
    1. God’s decretive, sovereign, or hidden will. By this, theologians refer to the will of God by which He sovereignly ordains everything that comes to pass.
          • He must… at the very least, permit what happens
Acts 2:23 ESV
Acts 4:28 ESV
          • It was man’s desire to crucify Christ
          • It was also in God’s definite plan
          • Exo 8:32  But Pharaoh hardened his heart
          • Exo 9:12  But the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh
2. His perceptive or revealed will
          • God’s revealed will is not hidden from us.
          • Revealed in scripture and the commandments
          • Revealed in God’s character
          • We DO NOT have authority to violate this will
          • But, we do have the power and ability to violate this will
3. God’s will of disposition.
          • This will describes God’s attitude.
          • It defines what is pleasing to Him.
          • Ezekiel 33:11 God takes no delight in the death of the wicked
          • Yet, God judges the wicked
              • Displays God’s justice
(3) but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish
    • Chapter 2 speaks of Noah and Lot
    • Chapter 3 talks about the return of Christ and God waiting
    • (15)  And count the patience of our Lord as salvation
        • The return of Christ & Noah and Lot & salvation are ALL connected
2Pe 2:9
    • In context… this does not flow
    • 2Pe 2:9  keep the unrighteous under punishment
    • not wishing that any should perish
    • This is speaking of His elect
        • but is patient toward you
            • He waits for Noah to build the ark
            • He waits for Lot to leave town
            • He waits until His last sheep comes in
        • God is waiting to return
    • Quoted out of context:  not wishing that any should perish
        • A.  It is implied, God is not sovereign in salvation?
            • He can only wish for us to be saved
        • B. if God is sovereign and there is a universal salvation
                • Everyone must be saved
    • We know from the rest of scripture God is Sovereign
        • The crucifixion
        • Pharaoh’s heart
        • The Assyrians’
    • We also know, universal salvation is a lie
        • In this SAME TEXT we see judgment
  1. Bottom line: God is waiting for His people to come in, as he did for Noah and Lot
  2. God does not take pleasure, but yet judgment still comes
2Pe 3:10  But the day of the Lord will come like a thief
1 Thessalonians 5:3-5 ESV
    • Neither Peter or Paul says Christians won’t be here
    • Would say, it will not surprise you because you will be gone?
    • It says, because you are children of light
        • But YOU will not be caught off guard
        • Destruct comes upon them
Utter destruction – (10)
    • This is a warning to be ready
    • Will he find you ready?
    • What will you have to show your master?
    • The point is to get the church ready and keep it ready
(11)  lives of holiness and godliness,
    • Why I hate the prosperity gospel
        • The emphasis is NOT on holiness and godliness
        • The emphasis is ON you and your stuff
        • On your physical health
            • Paul said when I am weak I am strong
            • Whether we have much or nothing we still praise God
    • Remember Lot’s wife
        • She looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt
    • What is important to you
        • Your house
        • Your car
        • Your property
        • Your cell phones
        • Your friends
        • Your family (witness)
        • You never see a U-Haul at a funeral
        • The things that seem important now will be meaningless
    • We are to wait for it
        • Hastening means waiting eagerly
        • To desire this day to come
    • So many Christians don’t want to see this day
        • Why?
        • Let’s talk…
        • Young Christian
            • Fear of the unknown
            • But the more you know Christ the better it gets
            • The good he has for you
            • The sacrifice he made for you, his love and steadfastness
            • You don’t lose anything of value, but great gains
        • Nothing compares to being with God
    • If this bothers you, draw closer to Christ and see that he is good
        • Realize you can do nothing on your own
Luke 17:33 ESV
Matthew 16:24-25 ESV
    • Not much denying yourself today
        • Come to our church and learn how to deny yourself.
    • Like Lot, we should be tormented with the wickedness around us
2 Peter 2:8 ESV
    • We have a promise
        • When Christ returns, we will escape wickedness
        • We will live FOREVER in righteousness
        • Young Christian, the more wickedness you see…

        • Pilgrim wakes up and knows of the coming destruction
        • Journey from the City of Destruction to The Celestial City
            • Which city would you want to live in?
                • Your family, friends, and stuff is in the City of Destruction
            • The journey has many obstacles
            • Many distractions
                • Journey has begun, ??? return to The City of Destruction
        • The Celestial City
            • No sin, no death, no lying, tears, stealing, cheating, gold is used for pavement
            • God is present
    • The emphasis of this section
    • Is to be ready
        • How?
    • In yourself sanctification is imperfect
        • We have all slipped and fallen and have gotten dirty
        • Not even a speck of dirt
        • Wash and wash but the stains remain
            • Yet he requires us to be spotless
            • So, so… many go wrong here
        • The blood of His son Jesus
            • This is the power of the blood
    • In Christ sanctification is perfect
        • By the blood of Christ we can go before God
        • Spotless and without blemish and at peace
(15)  And count the patience of our Lord as salvation
    • This goes with verse 9
    • Each day the Lord waits, more and more are saved
        • Sadly, more are also hardened
        • He won’t come until the last person is in the ark
    • God doesn’t execute judgment instantly
        • People tend to forget about God
        • They want to distance themselves from authority (Spring Break)
    • Falsely say, things will continue as they always have
        • This passage urges us to get ready
        • If company is coming to your house – you clean
            • What if the President or a King was coming?
    • Speaking of things coming – Hurricane Irma (Harvey)
        • Rightfully, we sound the warnings
        • The president, congress, governors, mayors, the military, FEMA
        • They board up their windows
        • They stack up sand bags
        • People perform a mass exodus
        • We have 24/7 news coverage
        • Everyone is talking about the coming destruction
        • Volunteers are ready to help
    • Just shows how fallen this world is
        • Yes, there is a hurricane coming and it will bring destruction
        • Christ, is also coming and this will bring UTTER destruction
            • Nothing will be left
            • Not one building
            • How should we treat this?
            • Cries for repentance
            • Escape from City of Destruction to The Celestial City
            • Flee to safety
If you knew Christ was coming tomorrow, how would you live today?
