Summary

Sermon: Contradiction, Non-Denominational Unity  Ephesians 2:19-22; Ephesians 3:1
When you examine what the Bible says and how we think, we can have contradictions.  When our thinking contradicts what the Bible actually says, which do you think we should follow?  This is why it is so important to return to the Word of God to see what it actually says.

Ephesians 2:19-22 ESV

When you examine what the Bible says and how we think, we can have contradictions.  When our thinking contradicts what the Bible actually says, which do you think we should follow?  This is why it is so important to return to the Word of God to see what it actually says and submit to it.

you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,

    • Saints meaning set apart
        • The household is a family
            • Not a dysfunctional family
        • Different types of people working together
            • Submitting to the Word and one another
            • Each person has his or her part
    • Who’s house is it?  God’s household
        • God’s household is not in disorder
            • It is not dirty, there is nothing offensive in this house

    • A chief cornerstone – everything is set according to this stone
        • Every line, all angles in every direction align with this stone
        • This is the starting point
        • All measurements are taken from this point
    • The lines going out are true lines laid by the Apostles and Prophets
        • Each line laid by them conforms to Christ

1 Corinthians 3:9-13 ESV

    • The church must be built upon the rock, which is Christ
        • The apostles reveal Christ, not themselves
        • They are not concerned with us knowing them, but Christ
        • Be wary of preachers talking about themselves more than Christ
            • We know about the apostles in the light of Christ
            • They do not boast in themselves, they boast in Christ
    • What is our teaching based on? Christ and His truth
        • We are told to believe, believe what?
        • Some mystic abstract version of Christ with no substance?
        • believe – accept (something) as true; to be sure of the truth
        • How can we believe if there isn’t truth???
    • You have your truth, I have my truth, just believe, all roads lead to the same God
        • How can there be unity without truth
            • Football team, with different playbooks
                • Each of the 11 players act as head coach
    • We hear a lot about unity today
        • Doctrine divides so let’s remove it for unity’s sake
        • This means we remove the truth of Christ
        • Are the words of the Bible not important to us?
            • You can’t have part of Christ
        • Unity at the expense of the teaching of the apostles and prophets
            • This is also removing Christ
            • Just keep the name of Christ
    • Explain this to me??? On one hand, unity on the other hand non-denominationalism
        • No structure, nothing handed down, just focused on Jesus
        • 2,000 years of Holy Spirit filled teachers and preachers
    • Valid reason, maybe the denomination needs reformed back to scripture
        • Invalid reasons – Are soooooooo many
            • There are many things we should not argue over
    • There are many things in scripture we dismiss because we don’t like it
        • We dismiss these things without a valid reason or thought
    • The assembling together, internet, radio, self-study

Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV

    • Should there be women pastors???
        • Never consider what the Bible teaches…
            • I could go on…

    1. Not building on the foundation – how can you build upward?
        • This would be a pile of trash – Think of it…
            • Not building on the foundation is a waste of time
                • How much waste do we have?
                • Children teaching children?
                    • Young men and women are to learn from their elders
        • Are we building on the foundation or in a new place
            • Where does it say, go and entertain the nations
            • Go and only say things people want to hear
            • Go and be liked by the world
2. What materials are we building with
        • Will our materials stand the trial by fire?
        • Will our works be burned up?
            • We have 10,000 members who never heard the gospel
                • Never heard they are sinners
                • Never told to repent
                • We stirred their emotions and they prayed a prayer
            • Is this precious metal or wood, had or stubble

built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets
    • Who are the apostles and prophets?
    • Prophets Old and New Testament – The canon of the New Testament
    1. Apostleship is not handed down, they were chosen by Christ
    2. Apostles were eyewitnesses of Christ
    3. Apostles and prophets were given power to do signs and wonders other Christians didn’t or could not do
        • Jesus wants you to walk on water and raise the dead?
        • No one walks on water today and the dead are not raised
            • There is no credible evidence of the dead being raised, really dead, like Lazarus and Jesus Christ
        • Remember when Peter walked on the water, why didn’t Jesus send the other apostles to walk on the water?
            • These were signs of their authority
    • Apostles and prophets speak on behalf of Christ
        • The apostles taught without error, who does this today?
    • We must hear a new word for today?
    • A foundation is laid ONCE and from there it is built up

(11)

1 Timothy 6:3-4 ESV

Galatians 1:8 ESV

Those most *DISSATISFIED* with the Scriptures are the most interested in new revelation

    • Do they submit to what scripture currently says?

Matthew 16:4 ESV

    • Luther and Calvin wanted to return to the scriptures, sola scriptura
        • The Roman Catholic church adds new foundations
            • Doctrine of Mary
    • The reformers didn’t need miracles – to return to the scriptures

(21)

    • If Christ is what joins us, how can we be held together without him?

    • Holy temple – Paul returns to the picture of the temple
        • This temple is made holy by Christ’s blood
        • Jew and gentiles, chosen in Christ
    • The dividing walls are broken down and we have unity in Christ
        • The church is united as one, different parts being joined together
        • We are the temple, there will never be another temple of God
            • Another temple, it is NOT of God

    • Did you ever build a stone wall?  I did
        • Explain – story
            • No 2 stones alike
            • We are not alike, we are all different
            • We have a place, each one has a unique function
                • We are not bricks, not uniform
                • God may chisel off the weak areas
                    • Conform us to fit
                    • We all have our place in the wall
                        • A sports team has different positions
    • Was Paul trying to please everyone?
        • No, he preached the truth of Christ
        • If he did not preach the truth, he would still be free
            • Paul’s a prisoner because of the Gospel
            • Because he is laying the foundation
            • Because he is taking the gospel to the gentiles

(1)

    • For this reason – what reason – what he just said in chapter 2
    • Why the dash? – Paul stops, why does he stop?
        • This is a digression, the pastor Paul continues teaching
        • Many believe he wanted to go into a prayer
            • Look at the structure of 14

Ephesians 3:14 ESV

    • Reason for the digression is found in verse (13)

(13)

    • Are they wondering,
        • Am I the reason Paul is in prison?
        • Am I the reason for Paul’s suffering?
        • Maybe this is discouraging to them
            • PAUL ENCOURAGES THEM

a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles—

    • But he is in a Roman prison
        • Why not a prisoner of Rome
    • He was turned over by the Jews
        • Why not name the Jews
    • Paul is in prison for Christ and he boasts in this

2 Timothy 2:3 ESV

2 Timothy 2:9-10 ESV

Philippians 1:29 ESV

    • What has happened to us?
        • Are we afraid to preach the gospel because of what others might think?
    • What should our attitude be when people hate us
        • Do people hate you because of Christ?
        • The martyrs were glad to die for Christ
            • I’ll be a fool for Christ
    • John 15, If the world hated Christ and you belong to Christ, they will hate you
    • The world loves its own
        • Yet we want to please the world
        • We want people to like us
            • Shouldn’t we worry about pleasing Christ
    • We should not go out of our way to offend people but the the truth of the gospel is offensive
    • We should reason with people and preach boldly
    • Was Paul imprisoned for pleasing the World?
        • Paul was imprisoned for preaching Christ
    • We are to take joy when we are persecuted

Matthew 5:11-12 ESV

    • Blessed are you
        • Notice our reward is not now
        • Our reward is not in this life
            • But that’s what we have been told
            • This is not building on Christ
            • This is a pile of trash
    • Paul boasts in his suffering for Christ which is for the gentiles
    • Paul sees this in the light of God’s sovereignty
        • a prisoner of Christ Jesus
    • Unity and submission to one another in the truth of Jesus Christ
    • In the teachings of the Apostles and prophets
This brings hatred from the world
