Sermon: Overt and Covert Scoffers 2 Peter 3:1-10

Summary

Sermon: Overt and Covert Scoffers 2 Peter 3:1-10

Warn someone today, of the wrath to come.

We have overt and covert scoffers denying the return of Christ.  Overt meaning, they openly deny it.  Covertly meaning they deny the full implication of what this day really means.  The return of Christ comes with us returning to Him but also judgement for anyone not in Christ.  The good news is in verse 9, where he is delaying this coming until his last sheep comes in.  This verse is commonly misunderstood today because it quoted out of context.  God waited for Noah to build the ark.  He waited for Lot to leave town.  Yes, 2,000 years may seem like a long time to wait but to the great I AM, what is time?  The really good news is, to us who are in Christ, the payment for sin has been made.  In essence, we are already in the ark.  Judgement may seem harsh and cruel but it shows we have a just God.  Our God is loving but to understand this great love we must look at the wrath to come.  If we do this and realize Christ bore this wrath for us…  How great is this love?  Can it be measured?

Sermon Notes:

2 Peter 3:1-10 ESV

    • Both letters are written to God’s chosen people
        • 1st Peter specifically saysTo those who are elect exiles
        • 2 Peter 1:1 ESV
        • Later – 2 Peter 1:10 ESV
        • Here (10)- I am writing to you, beloved

This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.
Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved
Rom 1:7  To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints

I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder
    • Peter wants us to KEEP our MINDS on track
        • They prophesied about the grace to come
            • The need for a perfect sacrifice for sin
            • God saving his people (Examples: Noah and Lot)
            • What does God save us from???
        • The prophets and apostles ALSO prophesied about coming judgement
            • God saves us from His wrath

2 Peter 2:9 ESV

    • What does Peter mean by the “commandment,” which commandment?

and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles,

    • Peter is not speaking of a specific commandment
    • By Peter using the one-word “commandment” he means everything!
        • He means all the specific commands
        • All of the teaching of Jesus, the prophets, and the apostles
        • Most importantly believing in Jesus
            • Teaching is doctrine
        • LOOK 4 verses earlier he used the one-word “commandment”

2 Peter 2:21 ESV

    • Turning from the “commandment” is any perversion of the truth
        • Teaching destructive heresies, following sensuality, greed, sinful desires, speaking false words, being irrational animals, creatures of instinct, enticing unsteady souls, seeking fleshly desires, forsaking what is right, speaking loud foolish boasts and so on…

2 Peter 3:3 ESV

    • Scoffers – or mockers (2 ways, 2nd most dangerous)
    1. Where is the return of Christ? He is not coming.
    2. Overlook the previous judgement
        • From creation, all things continue as they are!
            • WRONG!
                • There was a flood, where God destroyed the earth
                • Houston – 3-5 days of rain, mass destruction (40 days)

        1. Openly, where is God?
            • Openly deny God’s coming
        1. Covertly (Look true but secretly following sinful desires)
            • How is this done? (several ways – too many to list here)
            1. Never warn of the day of judgement that is coming
                • Overlook man’s sinfulness
                    • Never calling people to repentance
                • 3:7 Peter says there is a “Fiery” judgement coming
                    • Things are being kept or reserved for this judgement
                    • Those who are not in Christ will be destroyed
2. Minimize the coming of Christ (HOW?)
                • Jesus whisks away his believers in a pre-tribulation rapture
                • You have heard the teachings
                    • School bus (several students disappear)
                    • Airplane (several passengers disappear)
                • Does this warn people of immediate judgement?
            • IS THIS REALLY WHAT PETER IS SAYING???

being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

    • Peter says they forget, by the Word, the world perished through water
        • By the SAME Word, the world will perish through fire
        • Peter is reminding of the judgement and destruction coming

    • Think… what did Noah PREACH to the people of his day?
        • God is coming to whisk me away?
        • This ark will rise to heaven, and NOT mention the flood???
            • You will have time to repent after I’m gone
    • What did Lot say to his sons-in-law?
        • Let’s go for a walk
        • Do you suppose Lot mentioned the coming destruction?

    • I DON’T know everything
        • Exactly what was fulfilled in 70 AD?
    • I DO know the return of Christ comes with judgement
    • I DO know those who belong to Christ will be saved (Noah & Lot)
    • I DO know it will take many by surprise, but NOT His people
    • I DO know Christ will come when every one of His is on the ark

(9)

    • Oh! this verse is twisted so bad today.
        • The key, is context
        • Who is the letter written to, who is the subject of this?
            • but is patient toward you (the elect)
    • God gave Noah time to build the ark
        • Gather food
        • Load the animals
    • Lot was warned and asked if he had anyone in the city
        • Go get your sons-in law, but they didn’t come

Genesis 19:15-16 ESV

    • Question:  Was Lot’s free will violated? SEIZED HIM BY THE HAND
        • That’s a ridiculous question
        • Do you suppose Lot pondered whether or not his free will was violated?
    • Judgement waited for Noah to get into the ark
    • Destruction waited for Lot to get to a safe place

Genesis 19:22 ESV

not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

    • God waited for Noah, God waited for Lot and
    • God is waiting for the last of his sheep to come in.
        • Question, was there vacant space on the Ark?
        • Are there vacant rooms in heaven?
            • Jesus prepares a place for a what if?

    • God spared Noah and Lot and he will spare his people
        • However, on the SAME day, destruction came

Luke 17:26-37 ESV

    • The idea is today is whisk away and a few years later, judgement
        • People don’t want to hear about judgement
            • Whisking away… sells books

(37)

    • Where are they taken?
    • The birds are feasting on their flesh (Revelation 19:17-18;  1 Kings 21:24)

The rapture is described in 1st Thessalonians

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 ESV

    • Paul goes on to tell us more about that day!
        • The rest of the story

1 Thessalonians 5:1-3 ESV

    • Paul is talking about the same subject as Peter
(10)  But the day of the Lord will come like a thief,
    • God’s people will NOT be taken by surprise

    • I think we need a DOUBBLE warning today!!!  Why???
        • Very few are sounding the warning of judgement
        • It’s all about the happy whisking

(8)

    • Now, we know why the Lord is waiting
        • For his people to get into the ark
    • How long will He wait???
        • Until the last one is safe
    • Many try to use 1,000 in an end time formula
        • Maybe there is a formula but main meaning is…
    • What is a 1,000 years to a God who is eternal
        • God is I AM, not I was, or I will be

(10)

    • This is what it will look like when Christ comes
    • Does this sound different than the movies and books out today?

    • The new testament uses the term “in Christ” a lot
        • Being “in Christ” is the equivalent of being in the ark
    • Yes, it is a dreaded day
        • Many of our friends and family will suffer judgement
            • Just as Noah and Lot
        • There are no second chances
            • This is unimaginable wrath
            • Harvey, 50” of rain in a few days
                • Nothing compares
    • Those “in Christ” will be saved

Wow, you have a mean God?

No, we have a loving just God.

Loving because he took our place in this judgement when he didn’t have to
He bore the wrath of God, upon the cross
We can have forgiveness in Him

God is also, “just” because sins do not go unpunished

Where do you stand?

Are you in Christ?
Who took the punishment for you?

Are you in the world?
 Waiting for judgement?

No rational person would want to be in the world, yet many do.
Those who come to Him will not be cast out
Repent and believe
