Sermon: Peace and Security in Predestination  Ephesians 1:11-14
Chapter 1 verse 3 through 14 shows us the work of the father, the son and the Holy Spirit, in our choosing, predestination, adoption, regeneration and sealing.  This requires us to trust in God and not ourselves.  Once one puts their trust in God, we have peace and security.

Ephesians 1:11-14 ESV
Verse 3 – 14 is an overview of Ephesians
Paul makes many declarative statements
    1. We are chosen in Him before the foundations of the world (V 4)
    2. We are predestined to adoptions as sons (V 5)
    3. We have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins (V 7)
    4. We have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose (or His will) (V 11)
    5. A down payment on our inheritance has been made by giving us the Holy Spirit (V 13)
    6. We are sealed and guaranteed by the Holy Spirit (V 13, 14)
    7. He does all this for His glory, (V 6, 12, 14)
    • Last section focuses on our inheritance & God’s Glory
        1. Tells us we have it?
        2. Tells us how we have obtained it
        3. How we remain in it
    • Who is we?
Verse 11 is the church
Verse 12 is the Jews
Verse 13 is the church
(12)  so that we who were the first to hope in Christ [Jews]
    • Paul is more likely than not speaking of the Jews
        • Jesus went to the Jews
        • Jew first then the gentiles
 (13)  In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, [Gentiles]
    • All have the same inheritance
    • All belong to the same church
    • There is no more dividing wall, all may come in
[Jews] (12)  … might be to the praise of his glory.
[Gentiles and Jews] (14)  …to the praise of his glory.
    • UNITY UNDER CHRIST – Look at the prior verse, verse 10
Ephesians 1:10 ESV  as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
—— We Jew and Gentile make up the UNIFIED body of Christ
(11)  In him we have obtained an inheritance [Both Jew and Gentile]
Galatians 3:27-29 ESV
    • We all belong to Christ
    • We all belong to Abraham
        • You are as much part of the body as anyone else
        • No body part is unimportant
        • Each part has individual characteristics but all function as one
    • Outside the church we have Jews, Arabs, Westerners, Easterners, rich, poor, black, white, red, yellow, brown and so on…
    • In the church, the body of Christ is one
        • MEANING>>> (not outside and inside, cartoon)
    • How did we receive this inheritance?
        • Paul uses a VERY interesting word for inheritance!!!
        • The word Paul used means to inherit by casting of lots.
    • Paul could have used another word that meant by genealogy
        • Repeated twice, emphatic Used only one other place in Hebrews
            • Translated in English “obtained an inheritance
    • Why would Paul use this word???
        • We have a tendency to think casting lots is chance
        • There is no such thing as chance
        • Casting lots was used to divide the promise land
        • The result is from God
Proverbs 16:33 NASB  The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the LORD.
    • It may look like chance but every decision is of God
    • This reinforces God’s will in the matter of predestination
    • If that wasn’t clear enough, Paul goes on to say
(11)  …having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will
    • God’s purpose and God’s will
    • We might rub the dice on the leg, shake it a certain way, blow on the dice
        • Moma needs a new pair of shoes!
          • We can’t control the outcome in dice
              • Nor do we control God’s plan
according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will
    • Could it get any plainer than that?
    • Your inheritance is by the roll of the dice, God is in control of the dice
        • There is no such thing as luck
            • By the FREE WILL of God
    • We object to what the Bible plainly teaches why?
    • This is VERY offensive to us!!!
        • Take off your prejudice
        • Look at the plain meaning of the text
Here is how I dealt with the text
    • Who always does what is right, me or God?
    • Who is always righteous, me or God?
        • If I am honest, I’m more comfortable with God’s will than mine
    • If I can’t trust God with this, then do I really trust Him at all?
        • This is the difference between knowing who Christ is and trusting in Christ
    • Next came peace and security in all things
        • Yes, I still have up and down moments but nothing like before
    • If God chose me, if He predestined me, if Christ ransomed me, if the Holy Spirit sealed me, then I will wake up a Christian tomorrow.
        • Climbing this mountain of truth didn’t come overnight
    • You might still say, this is unfair
        • This is the same objection in Romans 9
        • If you are interpreting Romans 9 your initial reaction might be:
Romans 9:14 ESV  What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means!
 (11)  …who works all things according to the counsel of his will
    • What is all things?
    • This is NOT God just looking through time???
———— How does it occur —————-
    • How does God work all things according to His WILL?
        • HE USES MEANS
(13)  In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation
1 Corinthians 1:21 ESV
    • People are saved by the Word of truth, the gospel
        • No gospel, no truth, no salvation
    • This is why, I am so concerned for our churches
        • You must have the truth to be saved!!!
            • Plenty of moral groups
            • Make a Wish Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Alcoholics Anonymous, Local moose club, Veterans club, Lions Club…
            • All of these groups are moral and do good
    • LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY, a church can be a moral club
A church with out the means of salvation is a church that does not preach the truth of the gospel
    • Its members might be moral, they might think they serve Christ
        • They are deceived in thinking they are TRULY doing good
    • The truth of the gospel is vital to the Church of Christ
        • No gospel, no church, no salvation
            • Looks good on the outside, but lacking God’s power
Romans 1:16 ESV  For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
    • The gospel includes identifying sin and warning of God’s wrath
        • How can you have forgiveness of sin without sin?
        • How can you have salvation without wrath?
and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,  (14)  who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it
    • We believe in Him, in what He has done
        • This type of belief is trusting in Him
        • We can only do this by the power of the Holy Spirit
Romans 8:8-9 ESV  Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.  (9)  You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
  • TODAY, The emphasis is on the preacher’s ability to motivate
      • A motivational, An emotional plea or Entertainment driven services
  • Where is the emphasis???  The preacher or the sinner
      • Reach out and take hold of your inheritance!
      • With every head bowed and eye closed
          • Thank you, thank you, yes, yes! (manipulation)
      • Get everyone to walk the isle
          • Use peer pressure and emotions
  • Preach and teach the truth of the gospel –
1 Corinthians 3:6-7 ESV  I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.  (7)  So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.
    • We must be faithful in preaching the truth
        • Where does the bible use manipulative means?  We are to preach the gospel!!!  CONVICTION of SIN
when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation
    • The Sovereignty of God does not diminish evangelism it enables it
        • What if we preach and teach the word of TRUTH???
(14)  who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
    • The word guarantee means pledge or down payment
        • We are not left helpless but are sealed
            • A seal that cannot be broken
            • Another reason for security not confusion
    • Because of the Holy Spirit we can commune with God
        • We have been made alive!!!
            • Our minds, and hearts have been changed
            • We have peace when we should not have peace
            • We have power to speak the truth
            • We are compelled to profess Christ
            • We have conviction of sin
            • We have a comforter
            • We have the fruits of the spirit
Why does God accomplish this?  For his Glory
Each nail, each thorn, each stripe, each drop of blood was For his Glory
    1. God predestined our salvation in Christ
    2. God Chose us in Christ
    3. Christ redeemed us
    4. The Holy Spirit has sealed us
    5. This is all to the Glory of God
What can we do, in response to this?
    • If you have not been saved
        • Repent of your sins and believe and TRUST
    • If you have been sealed
        • Glorify God
            • How???  Proclaim and seek the TRUTH
            • A church without truth is a church without Christ
Matthew 15:12-14 ESV
    • The Pharisees were a moral religious group
    • They prayed to God, read the scriptures, looked good on the outside
        • They rejected the truth of God in Christ
    • Notice they were not planted by God and they will be rooted up
        • Let us examine ourselves
Eph 1:6  to the praise of his glorious grace
(12)  … to the praise of his glory.
(14)  …to the praise of his glory.
