Sermon: Put Off the Old, Put On the New Ephesians 4:25-32

Summary

Sermon: Put Off the Old, Put On the New  Ephesians 4:25-32

Paul goes over the practical application of putting off the old man and putting on the new man.  It is very important to do both, the putting off AND the putting on.  Often we only talk about what we must not do, the putting away of sin but there are also things we must do, the putting on of Christ.  All of this is for our own good but more importantly we do it because of Christ and the Holy Spirit that dwells within us.

Notes:

Ephesians 4:25-32 ESV

    • The overall theme: Unity in the body
    • Therefore – what is the therefore, there for.
        • Previous:  Taking off the old and putting on the new
        • New creation, all things new, and we still need to put off and on?
            • In the sight of God we are righteous
                • Sins have been paid, substitutionary atonement
                • The sacrifice has been made
                    • Like freed slaves, retuning to our chains
        • Do we expect to have — struggles?
            • 2 men saved, both drunkards
                • 1 never wants it again, the other struggles
                    • God’s sovereignty
                • Neither man remains the same as they were
                    • Both are changed, both are free
                    • Both have some type of struggles with sin
        • Taking off the old is to stop the old ways
        • Putting on the new is putting on Christ, VERY important
            • Easy to say don’t do this or don’t do that
                • The void must be filled with Christ
                    • Do not return to slavery

(25)

    • We “have” put away falsehood
        • We put off the old and put on the new
        • We no longer live in the lie, we see the truth
    • We put away lying, deceit, false facades, false doctrine, false beliefs
        • The devil is a liar from the beginning
            • He is the father of lies
        • BUT our father is the father of truth
            • We are to take on our fathers character
    • We are not just Christians on Sunday between 1030 to 1230
        • Let your yes be yes and your no be no
        • Not acting one way on Sunday and another way during the week
    • Negative is to put falsehood away, positive is to speak truth
        • Notice how Paul gives both the negative and the positive
            • We are to speak the truth in love
            • We are not called to remain silent,
    • Who does this apply to?
        • let each one of you speak the truth – All of us
    • To communicate with language is a characteristic of God
        • No other creature can reason like humans
        • We can evaluate ourselves and others and communicate
        • The Devil FIERCELY attacks and perverts this ability God gave us
        • The tongue is a great tool for good or evil
            • It can build up or tear down
            • It should not be underestimated…  More later
    • Why do we put away falsehood and speak truth?
        • we are members one of another
        • To maintain unity
    • Body analogy in a different way
        • We all belong to one body – One way of saying it
        • Here, we all belong to each other, more personal
        • We all belong to the Air Force but each of you are my wingman
            • What does a wingman do?
            • Thus we speak the truth

(26)

    • Note Paul does not say don’t be angry
        • He says be angry, YES, you heard it correctly
        • How do you reconcile this:

Matthew 5:22 ESV

    • There is righteous anger and righteous anger is NOT a sin
        • Another characteristic of God, marred by the Devil and sin
        • God is often angry
            • The wrath of God
        • Jesus was angry

Mark 3:1-5 ESV

    • We can even be angry with ourselves because of sin
    • We MUST hate sin
        • Other religions tell us not to lie, cheat, steal and guard our tongue
        • What’s different about Christianity???
    • What is the focus of other religions? Self and Community
        • So we are held in high esteem?  So we have honor.
            • Self-preservation is #1?
        • So we don’t hurt others?  Community love
    • But Christianity is concerned about God FIRST
        • To God be all honor and all glory
        • We cast off the old man, to honor God

(30)  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

    • Any of our sins grieve the Holy Spirit
        • This is why I am ANGRY with myself
        • Then I must put on the new man

(26)  Be angry and do not sin;

    • Very few times is our anger righteous
    • Note Paul says do not sin
        • Anger is very dangerous
        • In our rage we think like animals, we are irrational
        • Made in the image of God, acting like animals
            • This makes the Devil happy

do not let the sun go down on your anger

    • Barrow Alaska – 80 days of daylight
        • This is VERY important not to stew
        • If at all possible reconcile
            • Believers should ALWAYS reconcile
        • Settle it in your mind and be done with it!!!

Romans 12:19-21 ESV

    • This is your enemy NOT your fellow member in Christ
        • How much more our fellow Christians, spouse and family?
    • What happens when you stumble?
        • You grieved the Holy Spirit and we are to repent
        • We are to put off and put on

(27)  and give no opportunity to the devil.

    • The devil would love nothing more than to cause division
        • If we are arguing we are NOT doing God’s work
        • War time vs. peace time???  We are always at war!!!
            • Deep divisions will occur and they MUST be repaired
            • Gangrene – will infect the whole body
            • Yeast will rise all of the dough

1 Peter 5:8 ESV

(28)

    • This doesn’t apply to me?  I never steal?
        • Time clock at work?
        • Un-returned borrowed items
        • Downloading of music
        • Cheating on the taxes
        • Unemployment or welfare
        • Coveting your neighbors goods
            • Sins of the heart are also sins
        • No one will ever know???
            • Remember Grieve not the Holy Spirt of God
    • The positive
        • Get a job, work and share what you have
            • No, it’s mine I worked hard for it!

(29)

    • The Negative: NO corrupting talk, don’t do it
    • The Positive: build one another up in love
        • Some can say I never tear down, but do you build up?
        • Who has NOT torn down this week???
        • Who HAS built someone up this week???
    • Your words may give grace to those who hear
        • The tongue is a great tool for good or evil
            • It can build up or tear down
    • A ships rudder, a horses bridle, a spark that starts a fire

James 3:2-12 ESV

Matthew 12:36-37 ESV

    • Put away the old man, put on the new
    • The tongue can be used for evil by tearing down or good by building up
        • The devil wants us to stumble and fall
            • We MUST guard our speech
            • Evil thoughts are bad, evil speech is HORRIBLE
            • We must FILL our minds with righteousness
    • What if Jesus were standing here in the flesh, would I say that?

(30)  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

    • Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit
        • God dwells within us
    • Note, they are sealed but still told to put off and put on
        • Sinning or stumbling does not unseal us
            • The lie of the devil is, you cannot come back
            • Your sin/stumbling is too great!
            • Look at what Peter did

Luke 22:31-32 ESV  “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat,  (32)  but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”

Note: after we turn back what was Peter to do?

——————–

(31)  Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.  (32)  Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

    • (31)  …is putting off
    • (32) …is putting on
        • These are commands, do not take them lightly

Luke 11:28 ESV  But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you

    • We cannot have forgiveness if we are unwilling to forgive others
        • How can we pray the Lord’s prayer?

Matthew 6:9-15 KJV

    • Note the follow up out of the entire pray, Jesus comes back to this one thing.

  (14)  For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:  (15)  But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

    • To harbor un-forgiveness is VERY dangerous
    • This you MUST repent of right NOW
        • Do not let the sun go down on your anger
        • We must forgive each other
    • Question your Christianity
        • If you live in any of these areas, are you a Christian?
        • Repent and ask God for help

James 3:2

1 John 1:8-10 KJV

    • Confess your sins today!  Repent
    • Do not let the sun go down
    • Put off and put on

(31)  Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.  (32)  Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
