Notes:
1 Peter 5:1-6
Exhort – To incite, animate, urge by argument
Elders – Pres-bu-ter-os (Presbyter) – Old age??? Mature in the walk, experienced, not easily shaken, a leader.
-
- Why? – Term elder or pastor isn’t used as an office in the OT
- The term priest is used in the New Testament in 2 ways
-
-
-
- Priest of the temple or high priest
- Jesus is our priest or high priest
-
-
-
- Humility – Peter is a fellow elder
-
- Does he have authority? Yes
- Humility is laying aside your authority – Service
- Our example is Christ
-
- Christ laid aside His Glory and authority
- He emptied himself
-
-
- Humility – Peter is a fellow elder
Philippians 2:6-8 ESV
Form of God – Essence and nature of God – not physical
Heb 1:3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power…
-
- Either Jesus couldn’t grasp equality or didn’t grasp it?
- Text DOES NOT say He couldn’t?
- He could but didn’t!
- You can’t deny something that is never offered
-
- I’m resigning the Presidency of the US
-
- I’m stepping down
- Has he lost his mind
-
- I’m resigning the Presidency of the US
-
- This is humility
- Jesus [He] (7) but emptied himself
-
- How can you empty yourself if there is nothing to empty
-
-
- Peter, I’m a fellow elder
-
- I’m also a servant of God
- The ground is level at the cross
- Peter needs the same Jesus you and I need
- We all bow our knees to Jesus
- Christ is the head of the church
-
- Does Peter have authority, yes!
-
-
- Why am I standing here preaching today?
-
- Why not you?
-
- There is nothing special in me unless God put it there
- God’s plan and God’s grace
- Can I boast in anything other than Christ?
-
- Can you?
- So, we all kneel at the cross together
-
-
- Why not you?
-
- Peter is an eye witness to Christ’s sufferings
-
- I’m testifying to how Christ suffered
-
- Glory that is going to be revealed
-
- Can you imagine seeing Christ in ALL of His glory!
- The entire world witnessing the brightness of His coming!
-
- Peter, I’m a fellow elder
Matthew 17:1-2 ESV
-
- The glory of Christ – seen by Peter
- They were told not to tell anyone until after the resurrection
- Jesus didn’t walk around like this – face like the sun

- He will come back in glory and power

- Exegesis – Critical explanation or interpretation of a text
- Expository – Expounding the meaning of the text
-
- Clever outlines

- We are to be subordinate to our elders
- Some people have trouble doing this
