1 Peter 5:1-6
Exhort – To incite, animate, urge by argument
Elders – Pres-bu-ter-os (Presbyter) – Old age??? Mature in the walk, experienced, not easily shaken, a leader.
    • Why? – Term elder or pastor isn’t used as an office in the OT
    • The term priest is used in the New Testament in 2 ways
        1. Priest of the temple or high priest
        2. Jesus is our priest or high priest
    • Humility – Peter is a fellow elder
        • Does he have authority?  Yes
        • Humility is laying aside your authority – Service
        • Our example is Christ
            • Christ laid aside His Glory and authority
            • He emptied himself
Philippians 2:6-8 ESV
Form of God – Essence and nature of God – not physical
Heb 1:3  And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power…
    • Either Jesus couldn’t grasp equality or didn’t grasp it?
    • Text DOES NOT say He couldn’t?
    • He could but didn’t!
    • You can’t deny something that is never offered
        • I’m resigning the Presidency of the US
            • I’m stepping down
            • Has he lost his mind
    • This is humility
    • Jesus [He] (7)  but emptied himself
        • How can you empty yourself if there is nothing to empty
    • Peter, I’m a fellow elder
        • I’m also a servant of God
        • The ground is level at the cross
        • Peter needs the same Jesus you and I need
        • We all bow our knees to Jesus
        • Christ is the head of the church
            • Does Peter have authority, yes!
    • Why am I standing here preaching today?
        • Why not you?
            • There is nothing special in me unless God put it there
            • God’s plan and God’s grace
            • Can I boast in anything other than Christ?
                • Can you?
                • So, we all kneel at the cross together
    • Peter is an eye witness to Christ’s sufferings
        • I’m testifying to how Christ suffered
    • Glory that is going to be revealed
        • Can you imagine seeing Christ in ALL of His glory!
        • The entire world witnessing the brightness of His coming!
Matthew 17:1-2 ESV
    • The glory of Christ – seen by Peter
    • They were told not to tell anyone until after the resurrection
    • Jesus didn’t walk around like this – face like the sun
    • He emptied and humbled himself
    • He will come back in glory and power
Mark 13:24-27 ESV
    • Peter exhorts the elders to do what?
(2)  shepherd the flock of God that is among you
    • We were talking about this
    • Desire to reach the lost – what about the flock???
    • The sheep are starving, weak and sickly
    • Peter was ordered to feed His sheep and lambs
    • Peter passes this on to us
    • How do we feed?
        • Preaching and teaching
    • What do we feed?
        • The Words of God
        • The truth of God
        • The glory of God
        • The knowledge of God
        • Who is God?
        • The love of God
        • The fear of God – Wisdom
            • What is common here?
            • The sheep need God more than anything
                • Not the power of positive thinking
                • Not the pastor’s philosophy
        • Sound exegetical & expository preaching
        • Exegesis – Critical explanation or interpretation of a text
        • Expository – Expounding the meaning of the text
            • Clever outlines
            • Catchy clichés
            • Relate to everyday life
                • However, if your exegesis is wrong, your expounding the wrong meaning
                • Solid and consistent exegesis is key
    • [Elders] exercising oversight
        • To care for
        • Watching over
    • We are [under] Shepherd’s
    • Jesus is our Shepherd
    • It’s His flock
        • We can’t be the evil servant who hid his talent
James 3:1 ESV
2 Timothy 4:1-2 ESV
I charge you by God who will judge you!
    1. Preach the Word – Gospel, truth
    2. Reprove – Errors and heresies
    3. Rebuke – Sternness – for sin, privately and publicly
    4. Exhort – To show love, do good works, expound
Do all this with patience and teaching
    • not under compulsion, but willingly,
        • No cattle drives
        • Lead to green pastures
            • Also, willing to serve
    • 1Pe 5:2 …as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;
    • A lot of pastors who don’t preach for money
    • Church is obligated to support those who feed
    • Top 10, world’s richest pastors – Be very cautious
        • Several are overseas
    •  (3)  not domineering over those in your charge,
        • No tyranny
        • MX to Thunderbirds then to Flying
            • No boss over you 24/7
            • Foreign country
            • Study, know your stuff
            • You MUST grow up
                • Encourage you to read and pray
                • Might even call you out
                • Not going to drive you but lead you by example
    • but being examples to the flock.
    • (4)  And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory
    • POSITIVE – Could have said, you will be judged
        • Look to the future
        • Look to the prize at the end of the race
        • If you are going to do something do it right
            • Especially shepherding
            • Don’t cut corners
            • What is the bare minimum I can do?
                • You don’t need to be an Elder
The Church of Christ is NOT a democracy
        • We have a God given structure
        • We are to be subordinate to our elders
        • Some people have trouble doing this
            • STORY:  Hydraulics went out
            • Gear is stuck up
            • Electrical systems failing

                • Help wherever and when needed
                • Focused on doing my job
    • The Church is NOT a dictatorship
        • Elders, work together
    • All of us – – Be humble
        • What is this pride God opposes?
            • Pride in self and not God
    • Lies of the Devil
        • Independence, disobedience, and rebellion
    • God gives grace to the humble, NOT the proud
Hebrews 13:17 NASB
    • Under the mighty had of God
        • In persecution
        • Under his leadership
        • Under His governance
        • In all situations
    • You can do it, yourself- Pride
    • Take charge of your life
    • Roll up your sleeves
        • By yourself???
    • Submit to God
    • He will exalt you
        • When?
            • In His time
            • He will land the plane
            • You will arrive safely
    • Humility
    • Shepherd the flock
    • All to humility
    • God exalts – anything else is pride
