Sermon: The Sheep, Lion and Shepherd 1 Peter 5:7-14

Today we will be discussing the Devil who goes around like a roaring lion seeing whom he may devour.  Sheep are no match for a lion but sheep who have a mighty shepherd who protects the flock and restores them after an attack can stand firm in God’s truth.  God doesn’t try to save his sheep, he saves them.  Not one of them is eternally lost or totally destroyed.  It may look like it.  For example, the Devil may have appeared to win when Christ was in the tomb but the rest of the story shows his defeat.  This will end our 1st Peter Series.

One Way Christian Center is a Reformed Baptist Church, located in Olustee, OK close to Altus, OK and Altus AFB.

the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

    • It doesn’t say the Christian won’t have cares and anxieties
    • It doesn’t say the Christian won’t suffer attacks from the Devil
        • We do have cares and anxieties
        • We are tempted
    • My weakness may be your strength
        • Church is a composite of strengths and weaknesses
        • We must never be divided
            • But the Devil wants us divided
    • The lion tries to separate out the weak and young
        • He goes after the sick
    • He bites where he can do the most damage
        • He doesn’t go through the armor but through the cracks
    • This is why it is so IMPORTANT to gather together
Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV
    • Today’s church separates the young from the flock
        • When a young animal is born, it must be fed and taught to run with the herd.
    • Children are rarely a part of the church
        • Would you separate all the baby water buffalos and send them off with one mother?
    • Children are not being fed
        • Spend most of their time playing games
        • Being entertained — Kept young and weak –
            • And we wonder why they are devoured
    • The same goes for adults
        • Lack of truth and knowledge of God
1Pe 5:8  Be sober-minded; be watchful
1Pe 5:9  Resist him, firm in your faith
#1 Question:  What is your faith in?
#2 Question:  How firm is your faith?
    • Explain faith in God vs. self
1 Peter 5:10 ESV  And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
    • Isn’t his what happened to Peter?
    • How about Christ?
        • The Devil thought he won!
        • He was doing a victory dance!
        • But God rose Him from the dead
Acts 2:23-24 ESV
So, who is your faith in?  The Devil seeks to draw you away!!!
God of all grace,  – Jas 1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above
    • It’s all by grace and not of ourselves
who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ
    • Once again a reference to your calling
    • To His election and sovereignty of the almighty God
    • This is important
    • Do you have faith in a God who tries to save, or a God who saves!
will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
    • This doesn’t say “may” restore.
    • Can His called be lost forever?
    • If God loses just one, then he is not all powerful and there is no truth to this statement.
    • He loses nothing
    • He restores all of His sheep
1 John 2:19 ESV
(12) …I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.
(13)  She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings
    • Literal Babylon or Rome?
    • Most interesting, another reference to being elect
    • Pastor – Peter says Paul is hard to understand, because of Romans 9,
    • Peter has a lot to say about election.
Everyone needs a sovereign God, especially a persecuted church
