Sermon Notes

SERMON

Ephesians 6:10-20 ESV

Last week, 3 THINGS

    1. The Putting on of the armor
    2. How much,   the whole armor,   how often, constantly
    3. Who’s armor (armor of God)

This week, 2 THINGS
Why put on armor?
        1. that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

    1. Examine the schemes or wiles of the devil
    2. The standing of the saints

Gurnall, William. The Christian in Complete Armour

  • Look what Paul said to the Corinthians

2 Corinthians 2:11 NASB

  • Implies we are to know something about this subject.
  • A general does not go into battle without surveying the enemy.
      • How they will attack and from what direction?
      • What are their weapons and their effect?
      • How do our weapons and defenses stack up against the enemy?
  • A boxer studies his opponent
  • Basketball and football teams examine their opponents
      • They design plays to counter act their strengths
      • They position players to oppose other players and so on…
  • Also, you need to be able to recognize an attack
      • Your enemy uses sneak attacks, Paul says there is a spiritual realm

Two goals of Satan
    1. To draw us into sin
    2. To accuse us – to drive us into depression and away from God

The enemy attacks when it is best for the enemy (TIME and PLACE)

        • The enemy does not wait for us to get ready
    1. The newly converted will be attacked
        1. Look how Herod went after the Christ child, at the age of 2 and under
            1. Kill the Christ before he can do any harm to the dark world.
        2. Rain on a fire
    2. Satan attacks us when tragedy strikes or our needs are great
        1. He attacks Job after and through the tragedy
        2. He attacks Christ at the end of the 40 days, not the beginning
        3. An army will surround a town and starve it before attack (weaker)
    3. During a great work for God or outpouring of God’s love
        1. The devils designs are to stop our works
            1. Discourage our efforts
            2. Cause us to stumble and fall backwards
                1. Consider the opposition Christ faced
                2. The imprisonments of Paul, the martyrs
        2. Successful ministries must guard against self-pride
            1. Remember how Gideon was stripped of his army
                1. God wanted to ensure He would get the glory
                2. Paul was given a thorn in the flesh.
    4. When we encounter objects of temptation
        1. The fruit of the tree for Eve
        2. Paul tells us to flee sexual immorality
        3. Can family or friends be temptations to sin???
            1. What about someone sent to anger or test you?
        4. Those closest to us can be instruments of the devil at times:
            1. Sampson’s Delilah, Adam’s Eve, or Job’s wife who said, “Curse!”
            2. Who is closer than a spouse?
        5. David’s counselor Ahithophel & Christ’s apostle Judas
    5. At the time of our death
        1. Your body is weak and filled with pain
        2. Your mind is cloudy and your defenses are lowered
        3. This is the devil’s last chance, it’s now or never
            1. The passion of Christ

The wiles, schemes or ways of the devil

    • He can wear a counterfeit uniform of the Christian
        • He flies our flag, a Trojan horse set as a gift to get inside the walls
        • A friend, a family member, a counselor, pastor, a false prophet
            • Rarely makes a frontal assault, he is the deceiver!!!

2 Corinthians 11:13-14 NASB

    • We can know them by their fruit
        • Is their counsel based on the Word of God?
        • Satan will quote the Word of God BUT twist it!
    • The most dangerous attack is one made from within
        • Spies that infiltrate behind enemy lines
        • Weaken or poison the army to prepare for an all-out assault
    • The devil is modest when he temps
        • He did not come out and tell Eve to eat
            • “Indeed, has God said?”

Many have yielded to go a mile with Satan, that never intended to go two; but when once on the way, they have been allured farther and farther, till at last they know not how to leave his company.  Gurnall, William. The Christian in Complete Armour

    • The temptations build on one another
    •  – Christ is hungry after 40 days of fasting
        • Turn stones into bread
        • Worship me
            • Christ defeats both of these with the Word of God
        • Satan thoughts; “If you have such confidence in the Word of God”
            • Cast yourself down!
            • Then the devil quotes the Word of God

Luke 4:10-11 NASB
——————————–
    • Satan tempts us to neglect the duty to worship God
        • Tempts us to worship God in our own ways
            • Nadab and Abihu – to bring strange fire before the Lord
            • The golden calf
    • Satan is there to lie to us, as if it were God speaking.
        • He tells us what we want to hear

1 Kings 22:20-22 NASB

    • This was Satan or one of his messengers just as in the book of Job
        • False prophets, giving a good report instead of the truth

2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV

    • Who leads the people to false teachings and doctrine?
        • Who is the father of lies?  Satan
————
    • The Pride of man is a tool in the devils hand
        • You are not so bad, just clean yourself up and present yourself to God
        • You are not completely dead in sin, you can save yourself
    • Termites have invaded your home for years
        • Not a board remains untouched
        • One professional says the entire house is lost
        • All others say, change out a few boards
            1. The Bible tells us the entire house is corrupt, and it all needs to come down and sin must be put to death.
            2. Termite treatment and a new house are expensive, so you kill the termites you see, change out a few boards and touch up the paint???  — Because we want to do it our way!!!
                • In the end, who will have a house?
                    • Pride aside, your house is ruined, the heart is corrupt
                    • You have no means to save yourselves
——————-
The devil is also an accuser

    • He takes our sin and accuses us of being un-worthy
    • He sends one to wait for the preacher to mix up a word or miss speak
        • But utilize this to hone our language and skills
        • Let this humble us more to rely on God
    • He will send someone to say you are a hypocrite, stop your ministry
        • What is a hypocrite?

Zechariah 3:2 ESV

He is but new plucked out of the fire.   No wonder there are some sparks unquenched, some corruptions unmortified, some disorders unreformed in his place and calling;  Gurnall, William. The Christian in Complete Armour

    • Send Satan to the one who paid for sin!
    • It is Christ!!! who is at God’s right hand!!!  who cleared all of the debts!!!
    • Tell the devil to take up the balance with Christ, to see what sin is lacking!!!

Satan; “Oh but your sorrow does not equal the depths of your sin?  You do not have true repentance!

What shall we do?

    1. First, no amount of sorrow can equal the depths of the smallest sin against an infinite Holy God.
        1. It does not hurt to examine if we have truly repented
        2. Very few today, repent of their sins
    2. Second, look to the Grace of God

A murderer condemned to die is so possessed with the fear of death and thought of the gallows, that there lies the slain body, it may be, before him, unlamented by him: but when his pardon is brought, then he can bestow his tears freely on his murdered friend.   ‘They shall look on him whom they have pierced, and mourn.’  Gurnall, William. The Christian in Complete Armour

Satan’s messenger; “Oh, you used to do this or that and you are unworthy of God.

Such as rake up the saint’s old sins, which God hath forgiven and forgotten, merely to grieve their spirits and bespatter their names.   These show their devilish malice indeed, who can take such pains to travel many years back, that they may find a handful of dirt to throw on the saint’s face.  Gurnall, William. The Christian in Complete Armour

    • Beware of those who want you to dig up your past!
    • The old man is dead, leave him dead and buried

Devil;  “Your sins are not as bad as most, so don’t worry about them.”
    • Any sin brings death, the wages of one sin is death, Adam and Eve

How will we stand?  By putting on the whole armor of God
Everything is governed by God’s sovereignty and providence
    • Paul was given a thorn in the flesh to guard against pride
    • Joseph’s brothers meant it for evil but God meant it for good
    • Peter’s fall brought him back stronger
    • Who appreciates the father more, the son who never left or the prodigal son?
    • Jonah may have been swallowed by the great fish but he was not digested
    • Christ was tempted in all things
        • All of these sinful acts served the purpose of God
            • The strong fire removes the impurities from the Gold
            • Temptations display and remove our impurities

    • God does not encourage wickedness but He does pity weakness.
        • A child born disabled vs. one without disabilities
        • We are born in sin and are weak in ourselves

The mother never hath such advantage to show her affection to her child as when in distress, sick, poor or imprisoned; so neither hath Christ to his children as when tempted, yea, worsted by temptation.   When his children lie in Satan’s prison, bleeding under the wounds of their consciences, this is the season he takes to give an experiment of his tender heart in pitying, his faithfulness in praying for them, his mindfulness in sending succour to them, yea, his dear love in visiting them by his comforting Spirit.  Gurnall, William. The Christian in Complete Armour

Take comfort in God
He will not lose one of his sheep
You will stand but not of your own
By the armor of God we stand
By the power of God we stand
By the grace of God we stand
By the word of God we stand
Raise your eyes to the Lord and stand against the wiles of the devil
