Sermon: The Biblical and Historical Doctrine of Election  Ephesians 1:3-6
What does the Bible say about election, God choosing us?  This topic is rarely discussed today and when it is, most of the time it is not biblically or historically accurate.

Ephesians 1:3-6 ESV
    • Many, difficulties with election and predestination
    • Understand it all?
        • Why- According to God’s will
        • How – Unknown (Trinity)
    • Steep mountain & Beautiful oasis
    • Many “Christians” have never heard or pondered this.
Search the bible and the history books, you will find…
    • Spurgeon said, “I have never preached this doctrine without seeing conversions,     and I believe I never shall.
    • When people asked him how he reconciled preaching election with extending the gospel, he asserted, “There is no need to reconcile them, for they have never yet quarreled with one another.
Paul starts off with PRAISE: Blessed – Adorable, Greek word for eulogy – a speech that praises someone
    • What is the chief end of man?  To glorify God and to enjoy Him
Psalms 150:6 NASB
    • We are required to praise Him
Romans 1:21 NASB
    • Jesus our KING is entering Jerusalem – Silence them!!!
Luke 19:40 NASB
    • Praise and glory be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
    • Why is Paul excited?  Because of what comes next!!!
        • He is trumpeting praises for God
            • 14 verses in the Greek ALL one sentence we are on 3
(4)  even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world,
    • What is the specific reason for Paul’s praise?
        • Even as he chose us
        • Just as he chose us
        • Because he chose us
        • For he chose us
    • This word “FOR” ties blessed God the father… and choosing
    • Few simple questions:
        • Question 1:  Who chose? (God)
        • Question 2:  From among what did He choose? (mankind/world)
        • Question 3:  Who was chosen?  (us)
        • Question 4:  Who is us? (The saints – Saints and Paul)
        • Question 5:  Is this a reason to praise God?
            • YES!  You were once dead in your sins
                • Unwilling and unable to praise God
                • No one can qualify themselves
    • If stones would praise him, how much more us?
        • The blessings are immeasurable, unearthly, heavenly
        • Disney, would say, “wish upon a star.”
    • What is the Biblical Doctrine of Predestination?
    • Why DO the saints ascribe blessings to God and others curse?
        • Is there something better about you?
    • Paul is writing to the saints, to Christians, followers of Christ
        • Paul says he chose us, what does that mean?
            • This is a positive statement vs. negative side
  • 2 major difficulties!!!
    1. What about those whom He didn’t choose?
        • You might say, is this fair?
        • Ask, Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! Rom 9
        • Should it be a merit-based system?  Instead of grace???
2. There must be a reason besides God’s purpose?
        • Something we have done, some spark of life?
    • We will examine these as we go on
    • He chose us
          • Who is us?  Saints
              • We must acknowledge this much
    1. It’s very uncommon to hear anyone preach on it
        1. Preaching through books vs…
    2. OT (filled with election)
        1. Does it bother you God chose Israel and not Egypt?
        2. Be consistent in your “feelings”
    3. Jesus never taught it?
        1. Jesus:  John 6, 10, 15, 17
        2. He came to save His people
    4. Paul and Peter
        1. Peter:  1 Peter 1:1, 2 Peter 1:10
        2. Time does not permit to quote all the verses
2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 NASB
    • Why is election bad?
    • If everyone is rebellious
    • If none do good
    • If everyone is a hater of God
    • If everyone is an enemy of God
    • And God chooses some to save some, Isn’t this a good thing?
Matthew 22:14 NASB
People without ears
Matthew 11:15 NASB
    • Being chosen is humbling and not arrogance
        • Nothing in me, all God
        • We were by nature children of wrath called out by grace
    • Well he knows that I would choose Him so he chose me
        • This is arrogance because it assumes you are the reason
        • None are righteous, none seek God
        • The only reason why anyone chooses God is by the Holy Spirit
        • God has a choice but God’s choice is bound by my choice?
Romans 9:21 NASB
    • What does Jesus say about those who don’t believe?
        • Why don’t they come to Jesus?
John 6:36-44 NASB
    • Believing is based on the Father’s giving or choosing not the person
    • Those who come were given by God
(4)  even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world,
    • Why would Paul say were chosen before the foundation of the world?
        • Paul is speaking about us NOT a nation
        • Before we could do evil or good, God chose us
        • Romans 9 speaks about God’s choice of one over another
Romans 9:11-14 ESV
    • Is God unjust?
        • That’s exactly the objection Paul brings up
(14)  What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means!
    • NO OBJECTION, If God elected based on foreseen goodness
        • But there is an objection
        • Why?  Because the choice was made based on God’s purpose of election
        • God’s purpose and not my purpose
(4)  even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world
    • The master builder had the plans before he laid the foundation
    • Before Adam fell, he chose us
    • Before the first sin, God had this grad plan of choosing us
        • Paul is included with the word us
that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
    • He didn’t choose us because we were holy and blameless
    • He chose us so we might BECOME holy and blameless
    • We are chosen in Him
        • Connected to Him, a part of Him
        • In Him, in his death, burial, resurrection and glorification
        • Those in Adam are dead
        • Those in Christ are alive
In love   (5)  he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,
    • Is it, In love he predestined us  Or
    • we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
    • Predestination is the definite plan and purpose of God
        • Choosing, selecting or electing is how he carries it out
                • He does not miscalculate
                • He knows exactly where each stone fits
        • How?  Through the work of Christ
    • Then he says according to the purpose of his will – God’s will
    • Romans 9:11 God’s purpose of election
    • Ephesians 1:1 ESV  Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God
    • This is ALL based on the will of God
        • Not the will of man
        • Not an act of man, BUT by GRACE
    • He says we are adopted to himself
    • Have you ever heard of a child adopting a parent?
        • The parent adopts the child
    • When God is the one adopting, none of his children go unhappily
        • We become sons and daughters of God through Jesus Christ
        • We can pray, our father who art in heaven
        • We are not a hired hand
        • We are not a slave
(6)  to the praise of his glorious grace,
    • He chose and adopted us, ALL GRACE
        • We do not deserve it
        • This is pure grace and it is beautiful
            • Not our plan but God’s
            • Before we could work, God did
        • Nothing can be attributed to us
    • If that wasn’t ENOUGH, Paul reemphasizes the work of God
(6) …with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.
Ephesians 1:6 NASB  … which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
Ephesians 1:6 NKJV  …by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
    • This is to say, he freely bestowed this GRACE on us in Christ
    • Christ is the beloved of God
——————– TIME ———-
    • Maybe this is your first time hear about election,
        • This is NOT a new doctrine, turn to History
            • There are no new doctrines
            • People seek new and forsake and forget…
    • George Whitefield, Johnathan Edwards, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Charles Spurgeon, Puritans, Baptists, Presbyterians…
    • Hurt evangelism?  Not so, look to history again
    • What’s at the top of the mountain?
        • Peace, security and comfort in God’s goodness & PURE grace
        • A steadier walk with God
What about me???  Am I chosen?  Simple answer!
Matthew 11:15 NASB  “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
John 10:27-29 NASB
    • It’s doesn’t matter how filthy you are
    • It does not matter your social status
    • Your financial status
        • repent and put your faith in Jesus Christ
        • He will sustain you
He will cleanse you
