The Breastplate of Righteousness

October 14, 2018

Summary

Sermon: The Breastplate of Righteousness  Ephesians 6:14

You must pay close attention today because we will be walking on the narrow path.  What is our righteousness?  What is our duty?  How can we be righteous and maintain righteousness?  We will find Christ is our righteousness and the Spirit supplies our power to be righteous and yet we still have a duty to be righteous.

This week
    1. Where does the breastplate come from?
    2. Our duty
    3. Practical application

The Breastplate of Righteousness
    • Righteousness and Truth go together
        • You can’t have Righteousness without truth
        • We can’t have either without God;
            • All truth comes from God
            • If all truth comes from God, all Righteousness comes from God
            • God IS perfect Righteousness and our righteousness

1 Corinthians 1:30-31 ESV

    • Our Breastplate is NOT the metal of Self- Righteousness
        • Self-righteousness is like putting on a paper T-Shirt with a target
            • It affords no protection and actually helps the enemy
            • We are told, not give the devil a foothold
    • Our Breastplate MUST BE of the metal of Christ
        • A pure and impenetrable metal
            • Christ’s righteousness is imputed to us
    • The cross is a display of God’s wrath against sin
            • Our sins were punished IN CHRIST
            • We are either represented by Christ or Adam
    • BUT there is more…
        • If someone pays your fines, you are free to go
            • Does this alone make you a righteous person?  No
        • This does not affect your righteousness
            • You are merely a criminal who’s fines have been paid
            • This is ONLY justice, you owed a fine and it was paid
    • We need a pure righteousness to stand before God
        • A restoring of the image of God
        • We need a pure white robe because our clothes are filthy rags
        • God is our righteousness
        • Christ’s righteousness is imputed to us through faith

2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV

Philippians 3:9-11 ESV

Jeremiah 23:5-6 ESV

    • If the Spirit be not at the root, you will have no righteous fruit
        • The Spirt re-imparts the marred and lost image of God through faith
        • You are a new creation by the power and work of the Holy Spirit

Romans 8:9 ESV

Romans 8:14 ESV

    • In John 17, Christ prays ONLY for these children
        • He prays for them to not be lost
        • He prays for them to be kept from the evil one
        • He prays for their sanctification
            • Shore up your faith because Christ Himself intercedes for you!
    • The breastplate is impenetrable AND it protects the vital organs
        • Police wear bullet proof vests today
        • You can take a bullet to the leg or arm and live but not one to the heart!
        • If you lack the breastplate, you cannot win the battle

Part 2 Our Duty –

    • The Christian in Complete Armour – Frequently refers to our duty
        • Wait… if God is sovereign how can I have a duty to perform?
        • Yes, God is absolutely sovereign and Yes, man is responsible
        • The Bible clearly teaches both as true
        • It does not say how both are true, it only teaches both to be true
        • If we emphasize one at the sake of the other, we fall into error
    • The Pelagian and Semi-Pelagian Hersey and Hyper Calvinism
        • The Pelagian Controversy, man’s nature is not corrupt; The fall only affected Adam and thus man can obtain righteousness on his own; only man working
        • Semi-Pelagian – Man is somewhat corrupt but not so corrupt that he can act on his own and cooperate with God, both God and Man working
        • Hyper Calvinism is where we have no duty to God, since God is sovereign we sit back and watch God work.  What will be will be.
        • Truth is – God’s work in us is supernatural apart from our own work which never leads to life, not dependent on our cooperation, but a sovereign work of grace.  This does not erase our duty to God but only enables it.
    • It’s our duty to give God glory, love one another, and follow His commands by walking in the Spirit trough faith
        • Faith without works is a DEAD faith

Eph_2:10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Eph_4:1  I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,
Eph_4:17  Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.
Eph_5:8  for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
Zechariah and Elizabeth
Luke 1:6 ESV  And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord.

    • There is no such thing as a Carnal Christian
    • We must display the image of God that is being re-made in us
    • A sin acted out in the holy temple is greater than one committed in private
    • You are the holy temple, would we profane it?
    • Over and over again the Bible pleads with us and warns us

Romans 12:1 ESV

    • We go to great lengths to protect the truth
    • We guard the pulpit and the church
    • We watch for deceivers and false prophets
        • But do we examine our lives, our conduct our holiness?
            • We must not ignore sin in our own hearts

1 Peter 1:14-16 ESV

    • Has he chosen us for un-righteousness?
    • Should the wrath of God be revealed against our unrighteousness too?
    • The unrighteous SHALL not inherit the kingdom of heaven?
        • Will we forsake the image of God for earthly pleasures?

Ephesians 1:4 ESV  even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love

    • Will we stand on election itself and continue in sin?
        • Let us take the warnings of our duty seriously
    • How sure are we of our standing? The fruit is an indication of the root

Philippians 3:17-19 ESV

    • Godliness with contentment is great gain
        • Meaning we should be happy and satisfied with what we have
        • Not only satisfied but also continue in holiness and righteousness
    • Obedience to God brings peace
        • Can one hide from God and have true peace?
        • Can we suppress the truth and TRULY be free?
    • People of this world can have all riches and possessions and not have peace
        • Riches fade, family and friends die, there is nothing everlasting here
    • Entertainment, drugs, alcohol, friends, family, work (are they sinful?)
        • When used to mask and suppress our need for Christ

Isaiah 48:22 ESV  “There is no peace,” says the LORD, “for the wicked.”

    • But God protects His righteous ones
        • Lot was found righteous, and God did not destroy him

Genesis 19:22 ESV  Escape there quickly, for I can do nothing till you arrive there.

    • Christian you must have faith but faith without works is dead
    • We must put to death the deeds of the flesh
    • We must seek His righteousness
    • We must open our bibles and read
    • We must spend time in prayer
    • We must actively fill our minds with righteous things or Satan will fill it
    • We do not belong to this world
    • Abraham was a foreigner in the promise land, he did not assimilate and blend in, he was different, He was called of God

    • What if you are unsure of your faith in Christ?
        • Are you really sure you want to take this chance???
    • Think of it, will you eat after one with a deadly disease?
        • You will wash your hands from germs but not your heart?
        • You will take time to shower and clean your body which is perishing but we have no time to pray or read God’s word?
        • Compare the time you spend on your body vs. your soul?
    • Will follow those who are dying an eternal death?
        • Will you be influenced by them or will you influence them
    • Will you be Holy before a God who is Holy?

I charge you my children not to meet me at the great day before Christ’s tribunal in a Christless and graceless position!

    • God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility both are true!
        • We tend to ONLY emphasize the first part and last part of this verse
        • Others ONLY emphasize the middle
            • All of it is true

John 6:37 ESV  All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

    • Are you righteous enough to come to Him?  No
    • He will make you righteous, he will cause you to walk in his statutes
    • Through faith and by the Spirit He will make you righteous
    • You have a responsibility to come and if you don’t he will hold you accountable
    • If you come he will not cast you out

(1) Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD!  (2)  Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart,  (3)  who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways!

    • Oh, but I MUST give up so much!! You will gain MORE
        • The things you give up become detestable to you
        • The things you used to love, you will hate and the things you used to hate you love
    • Follow Christ not only in profession but ALSO in deed

    • How?
        • Fill your life with Christ
        • Meditate on the holy and righteous things of God
        • Spend time in prayer and his word
        • Ask him to enable you to do what he commands
        • Did Christ pray in the garden before the cross for nothing???
        • He prayed and yet God is sovereign
    • Know this, the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?
    • Put on the breastplate of righteousness forged by the sinless life of Christ
        • Continue to wrestle
By the power of God and only by his power, you SHALL prevail
