Summary

Sermon: The Coming Wrath of God 1 Peter 3:19; 1 Peter 3:17-22

We will zoom in and look at one of the most difficult texts in the Bible.  Then we will zoom out and look at the overall message surrounding this text.  We will all face God’s judgement and this is way more dreadful than any persecution we may face while on this earth.

    • Luther says he doesn’t know what it means
    • Vast number of interpretations
    • Many link it to the Apostles Creed:

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
      He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      was crucified, died, and was buried;
      he descended to hell.

    • The creed is not scripture, nor written by the Apostles
        • It’s a brief statement of the Apostles faith
    • Oldest copy is from around 250 AD (pretty good)
        • Oldest fragments from John about 125 AD
        • Not all early church confessions keep, He descended

NICENE CREED (325 AD)
He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;
           he suffered and was buried.
The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.

    • If he descended into hell, when and why?
    • If he descended into hell, what did he do and for what purpose?

INTERPRETATIONS:
#1:
Christ had to go to hell and suffer to accomplish full redemption (not)
#2:
He went to preach the gospel to people who get a 2nd chance (Noah only?)
A holding pen for those who haven’t heard, Limbo
Problems:
    1. A 2nd chance is not supported by scripture
        1. Hebrews 9:27 ESV  And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
    2. Luke 23:43 ESV
    3. Luke 23:46 ESV
        1. It is finished – paid in full!
        2. He wasn’t consigned to hell!

Psalms 16:10 ESV
#3:  (RC Sproul)

(18)
    • Christ went to be with the Father (being put to death in the flesh)
    • Rose on the third day (but made alive in the spirit)
    • Preached victory to captives (proclaimed to the spirits in prison)
        • Who were bound by sin
        • Text suggests Noah’s time?

(20)
#4: (John Piper)

Very simple:
The prophets of the OT had the Spirt of Christ in them.  1 Peter 1:11 ESV  .
When Noah preached, the Spirit of Christ was preaching through Him.
2 Peter 1:21 ESV

#5:  (John McArthur)

    • Fallen Angels during the time of Noah, who are in prison
    • Jesus didn’t preach but PROCLAIMED victory to fallen angels
    • Aren’t demons roaming free today? (SOME NOT ALL)

2 Peter 2:4-5 ESV

Genesis 6:2 ESV

    • Son’s of God were those created directly by God – Adam & Angels
        • Why not call the wives the daughters of God?
            • Calls them daughters of men – born to men.
    • Sons of God, could be the lineage of Seth, intermarrying with the daughters of Cain.

    • ROMAN Noah culture
        • Coins with Noah and his wife
        • 3 to 4 extra Biblical stories concerning Noah & the flood
            • Plus the book of Enoch – Referenced by Jude

Jude 1:6-7 ESV

Here you have angels in prison
Maybe Christ made a proclamation them?

John Calvin, Nothing had been done if Christ had only endured corporeal death. In order to interpose between us and God’s anger, and satisfy his righteous judgment, it was necessary that he should feel the weight of divine vengeance.
