Summary

Romans 14:1-14

*STAY FOCUSED*

Weak in faith or weak in “the faith”

Is it a question of faith or weakness in “the faith”

Romans 14:1 NKJV  Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things.

Stems from a lack of knowledge of “the faith”

Parallel verses – Paul talks about this A LOT

1 Corinthians 8:4-7

  • Welcome him

welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.  (2)  One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables.

  • Strong is to accept the weak
    • DO NOT harp on them to be free
  • Weak is not to judge the strong
    • DO NOT condemn them for being free

Don’t judge vs. judge  – CONCERNING INDIFFERENT things

Where God’s Word is SILENT we too must be silent!!!

2 DANGERS –

  1. Add to the law of God

Leads to a works righteousness

Called Legalism

Deuteronomy 4:2 ESV  You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you.

  1. Use your freedom in Christ to violate the law
  • What God forbids we accept
  • What God has not commanded we ban
  • TWO VERSES EARLIER
  • Rom 13:13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.

Romans 6:1-2 ESV  What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?  (2)  By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

  • Jesus didn’t make real wine???
  • Why the verses on drunkenness???

  • Don’t eat this
  • Don’t drink this
  • Don’t go to the movies
  • Don’t dance
  • Don’t own a TV
  • Don’t use tobacco
  • No music instruments
  • No artwork – Take down the picture!

  • Do or don’t Do – To the Glory of God!!!

“”If anybody can show me in the Bible the command, ‘Thou shalt not smoke,’ I am ready to keep it; but I haven’t found it yet. I find ten commandments, and it’s as much as I can do to keep them; and I’ve no desire to make them into eleven or twelve.

“The fact is, I have been speaking to you about real sins, not about listening to mere quibbles and scruples. At the same time, I know that what a man believes to be sin becomes a sin to him, and he must give it up. ‘Whatsoever is not of faith is sin’ [Rom. 14:23]”  Charles Spurgeon

  • You MUST be at my level in the faith
  • I believe XYZ therefore you MUST also believe XYZ

1 Timothy 4:1-5

  • All Christians are NOT equal
    • Musicians and Preachers
    • Charles Spurgeon, George Whitefield, Johnathan Edwards…

  • Nothing I do brings me in
  • Noting I do can save me
    • Therefore we are all equal??? NO
  • Direct inspiration??? So we area all EQUAL – NO
  • Regeneration and justification all ARE equal
    • Sanctification and the gifts of the Spirit – NOT EQUAL
      • Time
      • Study
      • Background and upbringing
      • Doctrine Teachings – Church did not teach
      • Knowledge of history
    • Be patient with the weak!!! ON THE INDIVIDUAL LEVEL
    • Weak MUST NOT make the rules! – Circumcision
    • Jews vs. Gentiles HUGE differences but one in Christ!
    • I am going to fix the problem, harp on it…

WEAK – “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

STRONG – “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

We have a sin problem – Lack of love!
